Job Overview

Astute’s Power Team are looking for an EC&I (Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation) Technician to join a large, brand‑new Energy from Waste Power Station located in Bedfordshire. The facility, now in full‑time operations, will provide a vital outlet for the sustainable disposal of over 545,000 tonnes of residual waste per year and will generate over 60 megawatts of low‑carbon energy – enough electricity to meet the needs of over 112,500 homes.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the EC&I Engineer as an Electrical, Control and Instrument Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Pre‑planned and reactive maintenance duties on all electrical, controls and instrumentation assets across the power station
  • Fault finding/maintaining mostly electrical systems – motors, drives, single‑phase & three‑phase equipment, switchgear, high/low voltage plant, and instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level & flow) and control systems
  • Calibrating instrumentation
  • Conducting continuous improvement activities, plant modifications and design work
  • Supervising third‑party
  • Working in line with maintenance techniques and best practices
  • Assisting in plant developments and projects
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records on the site CMMS
  • Assisting in outage planning, scheduling and coordination
  • Ensuring the availability of plant spares
Professional Qualifications
  • Ideally qualified in a recognised Electrical/CI apprenticeship in a heavy process industry
  • Relevant technical qualification such as an NVQ/ONC/HNC in Electrical, Control or Instrumentation engineering or a similar discipline
  • IOSH or NEBOSH would be advantageous
Personal Skills
  • At least four years of hands‑on maintenance experience with motors, switchgear, instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, temperature, etc.) and control systems (SCADA, DCS and PLC)
  • Practical knowledge of process plant and equipment gained in a heavy engineering environment such as power generation, petrochemical, steel works, CHP plant, paper mill, etc.; Royal Navy Marine Engineers will also be considered
  • Experience with high‑voltage equipment such as transformers/switchgear will be advantageous
