A leading NHS Trust in Greater London seeks an experienced EBME Technician responsible for the repair and maintenance of complex medical equipment. Job description

These posts are within the EBME Department of the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, a large acute Trust with around 900 beds serving the population of South East London. The post is based at University Hospital Lewisham where a team of four EBME technicians works alongside a similarly sized team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Support between the two main sites and flexibility in working at Lewisham is required from time to time; support to outlying community sites may also be required.

The Trust EBME department has recently expanded as it has taken an external contract in‑house and is embarked on a process of improvement to introduce a formal quality system and integration of the inventory and job management across the Trust.

Hours are 37.5 (8‑5 Monday – Friday). You will participate in the Out‑of‑Hours "On Call" rota.

**Please note that interviews are face to face, and there is a practical test prior to interview; you must be able to attend the Trust Hospital site in person**

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a skilled and NHS‑experienced EBME technician, with a background in the repair and maintenance of a wide range of complex medical equipment. An HNC in electronics or equivalent is the minimum qualification, plus certified training on a wide range of medical equipment, plus at least two years practical experience as a Hospital EBME engineer. The candidate must be a good team worker, communicate well, be flexible and supportive, and able to manage their workload both in quality and volume. Experience using a computer database for job management is essential, and good computer literacy is expected. A current driving licence is essential.

Key responsibilities
  • Accountable to the Head of EBME.
  • Provide specialised clinical technical services to repair, maintain, and conduct electrical safety testing of complex and patient‑critical equipment used for diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Communicate with clinical users to understand and assess faults, prioritise urgency of requests, and respond accordingly.
  • Contribute to planned preventive maintenance systems; ensure equipment is regularly checked for safety and functions to manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Produce comprehensive reports for each repair/maintenance job carried out.
  • Provide first‑line training for clinical staff within the Trust.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of spares to enable timely service to users.
  • Assist in procurement and acceptance testing of new equipment in line with Codes of Practice.
  • Participate in clinical trials and equipment evaluations.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, codes of conduct and local rules.
  • Attend training sessions to improve knowledge and enable the department to provide a better service.
  • Participate in an on‑call rota for emergency out‑of‑hours service (currently one week in four, subject to variation). This includes technical advice and site visits for essential repairs.
  • Deal directly with patients who use hospital equipment at home.
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the Head of EBME to maintain appropriate service levels.

Qualifications & training
  • Minimum HNC in Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Certification in the repair and maintenance of a range of key types of complex medical equipment.
  • Current driving licence.
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering (desirable).
Experience
  • At least two years of hands‑on maintenance experience with general medical equipment.
  • More than five years’ experience in the medical equipment field (desirable).
Knowledge & skills
  • Appreciation of current software packages used in medical equipment management.
  • Good working knowledge of electronic engineering principles and practical applications.
  • Understanding and appreciation of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Strong working knowledge of specialist areas of medical equipment management.
  • Previous experience of medical devices maintenance within the NHS (desirable).
  • Computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, maintenance management systems and MS Project).
  • Confidence in the use of numerical and technical data.
  • Good knowledge of electrical, mechanical and building systems, preferably in a health service environment.
  • Dexterity with small items such as screws and nuts.
  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment around workshop and wards.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods when repairing or maintaining equipment.
  • Current driving licence (re‑listed for emphasis).

Salary
