About the job

We have an exciting and unique opportunity for a highly commercial Supply Chain Director with, ideally, a retail merchandising background (FMCG equivalent considered) to lead and direct the establishment and execution of the overall supply chain strategy at Harvey Jones across procurement, sourcing, in-house manufacturing, contract manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and the installation of our beautiful kitchens into our customers’ homes.

The position will primarily be tasked with ensuring that our customers continue to receive an installed product and service of the highest quality, of the right specification, at the right time and at the right price and, in addition, ensuring effective support is provided to the Commercial and Marketing teams in their quest to develop market-leading products, optimise margins and increase our market share.

The focus of the role will be to drive supply chain excellence by creating a robust, agile, efficient, cost-effective and scalable supply chain that will provide a solid foundation from which to deliver value to customers and hence significantly grow sales and profitability.

Our manufacturing facility is based in Cambridgeshire and while you will be based there, we are happy to discuss a hybrid working pattern as we have a number of moving parts to consider at present.

What you'll do

You’ll be responsible for leading and managing the direction and delivery of the end-to-end supply chain involving procurement, sourcing, in-house manufacturing, contract manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and the installation of our beautiful kitchens into our customers’ homes.The key responsibilities are listed below:

  • You’ll develop and execute supply chain strategies and plans that align with and support the delivery of the company's overall goals and objectives.
  • You’ll redesign and optimise the manufacturing footprint by benchmarking supply alternatives and perform detailed ‘make vs buy’ data analysis to identify the best approach for manufacturing.
  • You’ll negotiate, implement, and manage the outsourcing of contract manufacturing for some of our products to ensure optimum costs and reliable supply as well as rigorously assess supplier risks and develop appropriate contingency plans.
  • You’ll develop a pipeline of qualified potential contract manufacturers capable of meeting current and future business requirements.
  • You’ll lead the redesign and implementation of the UK manufacturing facility including the consideration of factors such as spatial requirements, layout and flow, assessment of technologies to be deployed and options for automation.
  • You’ll oversee the day-to-day logistics, warehousing and manufacturing operations including production planning, scheduling and resource allocation and monitor processes to ensure efficiency, productivity, OTIF and quality targets are consistently met or exceeded.
  • You’ll overhaul the strategic sourcing and procurement processes that enable relationships with suppliers to be developed, contracts and terms to be negotiated that optimise value and supplier performance to be subjected to regular and rigorous review.
  • You’ll oversee the coordination and management of the installation of kitchens to our customers and ensure that the market-leading standards of customer service are cost-effectively maintained.
  • You’ll lead the establishment of and then own a best-in-class S&OP process that enables our leadership team to continually achieve focus, alignment and synchronisation among all relevant stakeholders and ultimately ensure that customer needs are effectively and profitably met.
  • You’ll closely collaborate with other teams in the business that are responsible for merchandising, product and range development supporting them in their quest to ensure that we design and develop market-leading and profitable products and services in support of a ‘good, better, best’ strategy and ensure their successful integration into the supply chain.
  • ·You’ll identify areas for process improvement including driving the standardisation and reengineering of product ranges and implement strategies to reduce costs both initial direct costs and those associated with remedials and warranty provision.
  • You’ll be responsible for fully leveraging our existing ERP system (e.g. purchasing, inventory management, costing, forecasting, scheduling), so as to optimise, simplify, automate and standardise key business processes as well as to provide greater transparency of and control over supply chain performance.
  • You’ll participate in business performance reviews at functional and executive level, looking at risks and opportunities and assessing whether the business is on track to meet its targets and deliver its strategy.
  • You’ll implement and enforce quality control measures to ensure that in-house and outsourced manufactured products and services meet or exceed customer expectations and provide the business with a sustainable competitive advantage, as well as ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and industry standards.
  • You’ll introduce lean and six sigma practices geared at reducing lead times, cycle times, inventory levels, direct costs per unit and raising efficiencies and output, thereby improving overall service levels to the business.
  • You’ll stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices, and actively seek opportunities to drive continuous innovation and leverage new technologies or methodologies to improve supply chain processes.
  • You’ll devise an optimal organisational structure (e.g. levels, reporting lines, spans of control) for your area and define the key responsibilities and deliverables for each role.
  • You’ll manage, motivate and develop a high-performing supply chain team, including hiring, training, mentoring and performance management, as well as fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • You'll be accountable for Health & Safety across the organisation, ensuring a safe and legally compliant work environment for both staff and customers.
  • Management of facilities and showrooms, coordinating with contractors and landlords for upkeep, improvements and tenancy agreements

What you'll bring

  • You will have a combination of large corporate and start-up or SME experience, ideally, in a PE-backed environment where you will have been instrumental in successfully scaling the business or have completed a successful transformation turnaround programme.
  • You will have extensive knowledge in either a Retail (or FMCG) environment that understands supply chain excellence to support internal customers.
  • You will have proven Director-level experience with responsibility for managing manufacturing, procurement, sourcing, logistics and warehousing.
  • You will have led projects to successfully outsource a portion of your manufacturing to overseas third-party contract manufacturers (i.e. UK, Europe or Asia).
  • Willing and able to undertake frequent travel to Europe, and potentially further overseas depending on sourcing strategy.
  • You will have had experience of both establishing S&OP processes and of leading the implementation of ERP systems.
  • You’ll be a natural leader with a track record of leading transformational, cost-reduction initiatives without compromising product and service quality with the ability to influence cross-functionally and where you will be able to focus on driving continuous performance improvements from action plans derived from robust data analysis.
  • We’d love you to have spent some time working for a furniture manufacturing business.
  • We’d love you to have a solid grasp of merchandising and product range development processes and the extent to which they are reliant on the provision of collaborative support from the supply chain team.
  • We're moving at a very fast pace and so we'd like you to be able to manage periods of heavy workload, set priorities and achieve targets.
  • Finally, we'd like to see that you're highly resourceful, are keen to operate on a ‘hands-on’ basis and that you enjoy a non-political environment, challenging where necessary as well as supporting, to get things done
