We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant General Radiologist with a special interest in Breast Screening and Symptomatic Imaging to join our dynamic and expanding team. This is an exciting opportunity to become a key member of our department, playing a crucial role in advancing our comprehensive radiology services.

The Trust has one of the largest breast units in the country, encompassing both radiology (screening and symptomatic) and surgery.

Our department is well-equipped, featuring ultrasound, breast MRI, breast tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography and ultrasound/MR fusion. Research is a vital component of our service, with numerous exciting projects underway, both independently and in collaboration with breast surgery. Current projects includes the AIMS study, an implementation study designed to appraise the benefits of a Deep Learning AI tool in breast cancer screening mammography. Training is a strong focus, with our highly regarded Radiology training scheme currently hosting approximately 64 trainees. Imperial is the Lead Provider for NW London radiology.

The department features a multidisciplinary team with diverse clinical expertise, including five breast surgeons, one non-operating consultant surgeon, three specialty doctors, and 15 consultant radiologists. This medical team is supported by breast care nurses, radiographers, healthcare assistants, and a dedicated administrative and clerical staff.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant General Radiologist with a focus on Breast Imaging, you will be instrumental in enhancing our well-established general radiology and breast imaging services. Your expertise will contribute significantly to both symptomatic and screening programs, ensuring high-quality care for our patients. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional diagnostic and therapeutic services, participating in a range of procedures from routine imaging to more complex cases.

In this role, you will be responsible for performing and interpreting a variety of imaging studies, including mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI, tomosynthesis, and contrast-enhanced mammography. Your skills and insights will aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as in the management of benign breast conditions. You will also play a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary team meetings, providing expert opinions and collaborating with surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and breast care nurses to develop comprehensive patient management plans.

Furthermore, you will be involved in supervising and training radiology trainees, sharing your knowledge and experience to foster the next generation of radiologists. You will also have the opportunity to engage in innovative research projects, contributing to the advancement of breast imaging techniques and improving patient outcomes.

The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring the department provides the local population with a high quality and accessible breast service, and achieves the national cancer wait targets for breast patients.

The job plan is varied and includes one stop breast clinic, booked US list, symptomatic breast reporting, screen reading, assessment clinic, MDT participation and general imaging sessions. There is adequate SPA allowance for continuous professional development, audit, and the opportunity to develop managerial and teaching experience.

Applicants must hold a CCT in Radiology, be on the GMC Specialty Register, or be within six months of obtaining their CCT. The ideal candidate will have possess advanced sub-specialist training in breast radiology.

While the primary locations for this position are Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals, this may change based on the ongoing Trust site and clinical strategy review.

The successful applicant will work within the division of Women’s, cardiac, clinical support and sexual health services and will be expected to participate in the management of rapid access and scan turnaround times, along with efficient and safe management of inpatient and emergency workloads. The successful candidate will also actively engage in trainee supervision and maintain close collaboration with clinical staff.
