Location: Field based working out of various sites in the patch area
Salary: Circa £35,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Shift: Day shift: 6:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday
Hours: 40 hours per week
Principal Accountabilities
People Leadership
- Take responsibility for all areas of people management for direct reports including coaching, nurturing talent, and motivating the team through effective leadership.
- Manage driver rotas to ensure trained cover for absences and maintain operational continuity.
- Provide coaching and guidance to team members fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Manage the team ensuring consistent communication and operational alignment.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide timely feedback to all team members.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive team environment by promoting diversity and ensuring all team members feel valued and empowered.
Cost Management and Budget Control
- Ensure transport operational costs remain within budget by implementing and monitoring robust control mechanisms.
Compliance and Legal Standards
- Ensure drivers comply with hours tachograph rules, speed limits, and all legal requirements.
- Maintain all vehicles to company and legislative standards, ensuring safety and reliability.
- Ensure vehicles are not overloaded and that only authorised vehicles are kept at the designated operating centres when not in use.
- Ensure all documentation is completed accurately and in line with statutory requirements.
Fleet Maintenance and Records Management
- Oversee the compilation and accuracy of all service and maintenance records to ensure compliance with legal and company standards.
- Complete monthly Fleet Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) by agreed deadlines, monitor performance and address issues through remedial action plans.
- Participate in internal fleet audits, ensuring any identified issues are resolved through action plans.
Temperature‑Controlled Distribution
- Manage and oversee temperature‑controlled distribution operations ensuring compliance with regulatory and operational standards.
- Ensure all vehicles and processes meet the specific requirements for temperature‑sensitive goods.
- Manage a mixed fleet of LGVs and LCVs, including vehicles based at remote locations, ensuring they meet operational and compliance requirements.
Customer Service and Delivery Standards
- Ensure all customer deliveries are completed in the prescribed manner, meeting agreed service standards.
- Investigate customer service issues promptly, provide feedback and implement remedial actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain a customer‑focused approach, ensuring customer needs are prioritised and productive relationships are built and sustained.
Health and Safety Compliance
- Lead the Health and Safety agenda for transport, ensuring the department meets all H&S requirements.
- Conduct regular reviews, training and risk assessments to mitigate potential hazards.
- Ensure team members are fully aware of their H&S responsibilities and promote a culture of safety across the transport operation.
Continuous Improvement and Process Development
- Make recommendations for improvements in processes and procedures within the area of responsibility.
- Implement corporate processes and procedures in a consistent manner, ensuring alignment with organisational standards.
- Work with management team members to develop a culture of continuous improvement across the site.
- Actively seek opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and make recommendations for improvement.
Independent Decision‑Making
- Operate on own initiative, making informed decisions to ensure operational success.
- Take ownership of transport‑related challenges, resolving issues promptly and effectively.

- Experience managing a mixed fleet of LGVs and LCVs (some remote)

- Driving own initiative as the site transport function lead

Additional Information
- Some UK travel may be required occasionally with overnight stays.
- Full driving licence required.
- Requirement to travel to link points.
- All people leader roles will need to participate in a weekend working rota.
- An agreed element of flexibility may be required.

- Internal: Head of CLC Transport, General Manager, FTM, Senior DTM, driver team managers, drivers, compliance teams, fleet and engineering teams

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
- Familiarity with UK transport legislation such as DVSA regulations and health and safety requirements.
- Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contractual requirements within a logistics or transport environment.
- Awareness of company‑specific compliance standards and KPIs.
- Experience driving operational efficiencies and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ability to communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
- Proficient in Microsoft tools including 365, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Teams.
- Strong leadership skills to guide, motivate and develop a team and drivers.
- Strong understanding of transport operations including driver and vehicle compliance, route planning and fleet management.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and developing teams, including conducting one‑to‑one meetings and managing performance.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or management role within a transport or logistics environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills to deliver briefings, team talks and safety updates effectively.
- Proven experience in managing driver and vehicle compliance as well as health and safety requirements.
- Awareness of health and safety regulations and best practices within the transport and logistics sector.
