Shape the future of data and analytics

Southern Water is on a major data transformation journey to build a modern, trusted data platform that supports operational performance, regulatory outcomes and rapid decision‑making across the business.

We’re looking for an experienced Domain Data Modeller to join our growing Data & Analytics team. Working within a domain-focused agile squad, you’ll collaborate closely with stakeholders to ensure data structures accurately represent business processes and information needs. As the Domain Data Modeller, you'll define and evolve data models, ensuring consistency, quality and reuse across the data platform. You'll help shape how operational and analytical data is structured, governed and consumed across our new platform and the organisation. This is new, key role needed to help teams understand where data originates, how it is transformed and how it should be used. Working closely with Data Engineers and BI Engineers, you'll ensure data products are built on robust, scalable information models that align with enterprise architecture, governance standards and domain ownership principles. You’ll also provide guidance on modelling best practices, data standards and business terminology, helping establish a consistent and trusted data foundation that supports both operational decision‑making and strategic insight.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing, implementing and maintaining conceptual, logical and physical data models aligned to business domains

  • Maintain and enhance the enterprise data catalogue, ensuring metadata, lineage and business definitions remain accurate and trusted

  • Translating business requirements into clear, well‑structured data models in collaboration with Product Owners, Technical Lead and delivery teams

  • Contributing to solution architecture discussions, ensuring data models support scalability and long‑term strategy

  • Working closely with Data Engineers to validate models against ingestion pipelines and sample data

  • Providing high‑quality model documentation to support downstream development and analytics

  • Maintaining data modelling standards and best practices across squads

  • Applying change management principles to ensure consistency and traceability of model changes

  • Supporting governance and metadata management using recognised data modelling tools

  • Capturing and maintaining domain knowledge and model documentation

  • Engaging with architects, SMEs, governance and compliance teams as needed

  • Managing and contributing to modelling work within the squad’s agile backlog

  • Actively participating in agile ceremonies, backlog refinement and sprint planning

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a skilled data modeller with strong technical foundations and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non‑technical teams.

You’ll Have

  • Proven experience in domain or enterprise data modelling on large‑scale data platforms

  • Strong understanding of data architecture, metadata management and data governance

  • Experience using data modelling tools such as Erwin or equivalent

  • Experience working with cloud‑based data platforms (e.g. Azure Data Lake, Databricks)

  • Familiarity with data cataloguing and lineage tools (e.g. Microsoft Purview)

  • Strong SQL skills and experience with relational and dimensional modelling

  • The ability to translate complex business concepts into clear data structures

  • Experience working in agile delivery environments, including use of Jira and Confluence

  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • The ability to manage multiple modelling activities across different business domains

Technical knowledge (desirable)

  • Enterprise and business architecture principles

  • Data governance frameworks such as DAMA

  • Data privacy, classification and handling principles

  • Change management practices for data models in distributed environments

  • Understanding of how data models support BI and analytics use cases

Qualifications

Essential

  • Significant hands‑on experience in data modelling projects, with experience designing and delivering Gold-layer data products in Databricks or a comparable modern lakehouse platform

  • Strong ability to understand business processes, information flows and source systems, translating them into conceptual, logical and physical data models that accurately represent business domains and provide a trusted foundation for analytics, reporting and data products

  • Experience in systems and database design, including relational and dimensional modelling techniques.

  • Experience collaborating with data engineers, analysts and business stakeholders and demonstrating ability to influence and build relationships across technical teams, architects, Product Owners and business stakeholders.

  • Hands‑on Databricks experience, including SQL/Python

  • Strong communication skills and experience working with technical and business stakeholders.

  • Understanding of data quality, classification, privacy and governance principles, with the ability to embed them into model design

Desirable

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science or a related discipline

  • Experience applying data quality, governance, metadata, lineage, security and privacy principles to BI and analytical solutions

  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or Microsoft Azure Data Engineering certifications
