Distribution System Operator - Transmission and Distribution Interface Engineer

Managing the boundary between transmission and distribution electricity networks on behalf of all our customers is crucial role for National Grid. The Transmission Distribution Interface Team is a newly formed team within National Grid DSO to be at the centre of how we work across the whole electricity system.An opportunity has arisen for a DSO Transmission Distribution Interface Engineer based at Tipton, Avonbank, Lamby Way or Pegasus.The DSO Transmission Distribution Interface Team is responsible for the technical and contractual analysis of the Grid Supply Points across our region, leading the reviews of incoming Modification Offers and ensuring coherent site strategies are being developed. Demand consumption due to electrification, and the uptake renewable generation is growing to meet the Government’s ambition of a clean energy system by 2030.You will liaise with National Energy System Operator (NESO), National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and relevant internal stakeholders to develop the network in a safe, secure and cost-efficient manner.This role will report to the Head of Transmission Distribution Interface Team within the DSO directorate.As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of two days in the office and three days home working. Our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future and we are doing this in a fast-moving industry with an increasing focus on tackling climate change, exploring new energy sources that are renewable, low carbon, and improve efficiency to meet demand.Main ResponsibilitiesReview Modification Offer received from NESO and lead on iterating amendments to the satisfaction of internal stakeholdersPreparation of Connection Applications for new Grid Supply Points and associated justification documentsReview B07 compliance reports and coordinating follow-up discussions and mitigations where future non-compliances are identifiedReview customer securities and liabilities including supporting conversations with external customers where subject matter expertise is requiredFeed into both distribution price control reviews, including ED3 and engage with NGET on their price control to ensure the work we require is getting delivered in a timely, coordinated and efficient mannerUndertake technical analysis of GSPs in conjunction with Primary Network Design and Connections Engineers to develop and maintain NGED site strategiesCollaborate across the wider TDI team to ensure costs are appropriately recovered from customersLiaise with NESO and NGET alongside internal stakeholders to ensure future technical compliance of the networkAttend strategic alignment meetings with NESO and NGET to help prioritise the forward-looking programme of works and represent DSO at joint liaison meetingsCollaborate closely with Connections stakeholders to ensure contractual processes meet the needs of NGED customers, internal procedures, and regulatory complianceProactively working with the data owners and maintainers to continually improve data quality, accuracy and system integrationProviding clear technical support to Network Services, Planners and Engineering policyTake opportunities to engage with the wider business to communicate changes and how it impacts the wider businessRepresent the Company on specialist groups or national working groups, as requiredProvide a supportive environment for trainees and new starters, acting as a mentor and directing work as appropriateThe Ideal CandidateYou should be self-motivated, inquisitive and demonstrate a clear knowledge of the principles and issues associated with distribution network design, load management schemes and network curtailment.An electrical engineering degree or similar qualification is required.The ability to present information in a clear and reasoned way, together with an open yet analytical approach to problem solving, and good computer skills are essential to the role. The successful candidate will be process driven and have a focus on data quality and an ‘automate-first’ approach to enable effective management of and development of the secondary network modelling capability.Experience with power system software including PSS Sincal, DINIS, Aspen OneLiner, PSSE, IPSA or Power Factory would be extremely beneficial. Experience in scripting languages, particularly Python would be advantageous.You must be reliable, well organised and be able to work effectively as part of a small team and able to work using your own initiative. Excellent IT skills are essential and experience with NGED internal systems e.g.Electric Office, EMU, PowerOn, CROWN, E5 and GitLab is desirable, although training will be given on the applications used.You will engage with internal stakeholders including on a regular basis, so strong communication skills are crucial. You will proactively identify opportunities to improve the existing process and work closely with the wider business to develop and implement new strategies.National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers.
