Job description

With the current postholder set to retire, the SRA is now seeking to appoint its next Director of Education and Training. This is a key position within the senior leadership team, accountable for professional qualification and assessment practices, including oversight of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), and leading a talented team dedicated to maintaining high professional standards.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategy, Innovation and External Affairs, this person will provide strategic leadership on educational policy development, ensuring that the SRA’s education and assessment requirements deliver regulatory outcomes and support a diverse, competent profession. This role offers a rare opportunity to play a leading role in the qualification of solicitors; driving confidence in high standards, supporting diversity, and ensuring the profession remains competent and effective.

This person will have significant experience of strategic leadership and management in a relevant policy field, with demonstrable accomplishments in delivering complex policy to produce effective outcomes. Their background will include understanding of professional assessment practice, capability in managing complex stakeholder relationships, and expertise in working with delivery partners. This person will be a highly capable public speaker able to represent the SRA externally and command the confidence of stakeholders and the regulated community.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is a legal services regulator that sets and maintains standards for more than 200,000 solicitors and 9,000 law firms, in a sector which contributes around £60bn a year to the economy. Whether it’s the impact of AI or shifts in the high-volume consumers claims market, legal services is a rapidly changing sector. This brings both significant opportunities and risks for consumers. The SRA will need to adapt to remain effective in a changing world. It is an exciting time.
