Job summary

A fast-growing UK challenger bank is seeking a Director of Credit to lead and strengthen the second line credit function. The successful candidate will shape credit strategy and ensure alignment of lending activities with the bank's appetite. About the Bank

A fast growing UK challenger bank specialising in property backed SME and mid market lending. The portfolio continues to expand across buy to let, commercial real estate and corporate property backed facilities. The bank operates with a flat structure, rapid decision making and a collaborative culture that supports growth and disciplined credit management.

The Role

The bank is seeking a Director of Credit to lead and strengthen the second line credit function. You will shape credit strategy, guide policy development and ensure the lending activity remains aligned with the bank's appetite. The portfolio is young and scaling quickly, which creates a real opportunity to build a high-quality oversight framework and influence how credit risk is managed as the bank grows.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the second line credit function and maintain strong oversight of underwriting standards and portfolio risk.
  • Chair the Credit Risk Committee and steer discussions on appetite, structure, policy and governance.
  • Produce clear and insightful reporting for senior leadership and the board with a focus on emerging risks and portfolio trends.
  • Keep credit policy, rules and procedures aligned with growth plans and regulatory expectations.
  • Work closely with first line lending teams to support consistent deal flow across property backed SME lending.
  • Promote a culture of sound judgement, efficiency and continuous improvement.
Experience Required
  • Strong experience in buy to let and commercial real estate lending.
  • Background in property backed SME or mid-market lending.
  • Prior leadership in a senior second line credit or Head of Credit position.
  • Comfortable working in manual underwriting environments and challenging first line proposals.
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging senior stakeholders and board level audiences.
  • Preference for London based candidates due to committee involvement.
