Leonardo UK is seeking Digital Engineers at multiple levels to join our hardware teams in Edinburgh and across the UK. You will design, test and integrate RF and digital electronics for defence-grade systems, working with cross‑functional teams to deliver reliable, high‑performance products.

We welcome engineers from graduates to senior specialists who can contribute across the full design lifecycle, from requirements through to test, verification and delivery, in a hybrid working environment

Qualifications

• First or second degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or related science.
• Experience analysing system requirements and applying them to hardware designs.
• Ability to solve complex technical challenges with system context and digital architecture.
• Experience in digital electronics, DSP, firmware, and mixed-signal design.

Responsibilities

• Design high-speed digital PCBs using FPGA and high-speed interconnects.
• Support full hardware lifecycle from requirements to delivery, including unit tests and integration.
• Document work products under configuration management.
• Collaborate with Systems, Mechanical and Software Engineers to extend SWaP-optimized architectures.
• Develop electronics from concept to prototyping and system integration.

Job Description: Salary: Engineer: £37,400 to £53,550 / Senior: £45, 200 to £61,950 / Principal: £53,300 to £71,400 Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. We are looking for talented, motivated Digital Engineers at every level to join our growing hardware engineering team within Leonardo. As a Digital Engineer, you will play a critical role in the development, manufacture and testing of cutting‑edge radio frequency systems within a range of product lines. With a focus on ensuring optimal performance and functionality, you will contribute to the advancement of our defence technology.

In this role, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to design, test, and troubleshoot RF systems. Your expertise in RF circuit design and analysis will be crucial in developing innovative solutions that meet the complex requirements of defence applications. Additionally, you will work closely with cross‑functional teams to integrate RF components into larger systems, ensuring seamless functionality and reliable performance.

What you’ll bring

• Designing high speed digital PCBs that utilise the latest FPGA, microprocessor and high‑speed interconnect technologies
• Supporting throughout the full hardware lifecycle from requirements analysis; through design, and unit test; to integrating hardware with the target system; and lastly to acceptance test and delivery to customer
• Fully documenting and recording your work products; keeping them under configuration management, and providing plans and progress reports
• Work closely with Systems, Mechanical and Software Engineers to develop sub‑system digital electronic architectures which extend our product range, capability and performance with minimal Size, Weight and Power (SWaP)
• Develop new electronics through the full design lifecycle; from early concepting, technology maturation and prototyping; through to main product design, build test and to system integration; and lastly to acceptance test and delivery to the customer

Qualifications

• First or second degree (BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc, PhD, EngD) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (preferable) or related science (e.g. Physics)
• Experience with analysing system level requirements documents and understanding their application to Hardware designs
• The ability to break down and solve complex technical challenges, including the ability to visualise both the wider system context alongside the detailed digital architecture
• Experience in developing novel digital electronics, including digital / DSP, firmware, and mixed‑signal
