Dietitian/ Specialist Dietitian

We are delighted to be looking to appoint a 0.6 WTE Band 5/6 Specialist Dietitian (depending on experience), to work at Newcastle Hospitals within renal services. Working within the regional renal unit and transplant centre for the north east of England. We will be appointing at a band 6 or band 5 depending on experience. The progression from a band 5 to band 6 will be pending successful completion of competencies within an 18 month period.
This is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your dietetic experience within a specialist area working within the already established multidisciplinary team. This includes both inpatient and outpatient work with the chance to be involved with service development and to gain experience in general nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplant surgery and critical care.
The renal dietetics team is part of Newcastle Nutrition, an enthusiastic and committed dietetic organisation, and benefits from excellent support from specialist colleagues within many disciplines. You should have already gained post‑registration dietetic experience across a range of areas in an acute hospital setting. Experience of working with renal patients is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to
- Deliver a high quality dietetic service to patients within the renal service
- Take part in student training and supervision
- Contribute to research and audit
- Work effectively as part of the MDT
You should be enthusiastic and self‑motivated and will:
- Have broad knowledge of general dietetics
- Be able to demonstrate ongoing CPD and have evidence of developing practice
- Be able to support colleagues and take responsibility for the clinical supervision of junior staff and students
- Have excellent communication skills
- Be able to maintain good relationships with colleagues and the wider MDT
Band 5 responsibilities
- Deliver a comprehensive and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic service to patients at hospital sites or in the community.
- Provide dietetic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management in the clinical setting.
- Act as a source of expertise in nutrition support and dietetics to patients, consultant medical staff, other health care professionals, carers and relatives.
- Deliver education and training to other healthcare staff and to patient groups.
- Participate in team, multi‑disciplinary audit and research.
Band 6 responsibilities
- Delivers a comprehensive and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic service in acute hospital services in the specialist area(s) or in the community.
- Provides specialist dietetic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management in the clinical setting and in one or more sub‑specialty areas.
- Acts as a source of expertise in nutrition support/education and dietetics to patients, medical staff, health care professionals, relatives, carers and all relevant agencies.
- Provides expertise to Nutrition Teams and works in other multidisciplinary teams.
- Delivers education and training at all levels.
- Participates in team and multi‑disciplinary evaluation, audit and research.
Band 5 qualifications
- Health Professions Council Registered Dietitian
- Degree in Dietetics or Science/Nutrition Degree plus Post‑graduate Diploma in Dietetics.
- Valid UK Driving Licence
- Knowledge of and experience in areas of general dietetics such as nutrition support, weight management, diabetes, in a range of clinical areas as evidenced via clinical placements or previous dietetic employment.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Evidence of developing knowledge in order to provide cover for specialist dietitians without supervision.
- Understands professional standards and Code of Conduct as set out by the Health Professions Council.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.
- Insight into specialist areas of dietetics.
- Experience of NHS/social care settings.
- Proficient use of Electronic Patient Records.
- Clinical Supervisory skills training.
Band 6 qualifications
- Health and Care Professions Council Registered Dietitian.
- Degree in Dietetics or Science/Nutrition Degree plus Post‑graduate Diploma in Dietetics.
- Evidence of specialist training through short courses or a validated qualification in one of more specialist areas of dietetics e.g. nutrition support, paediatrics, home enteral feeding, supplementary Prescriber.
- UK Valid Driving Licence.
- Evidence of participation in and contribution to audits.
- Evidence in CPD.
- Clinical Supervisory Skills Course and/or Teaching Certificate.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Basic training in counselling and/or motivational interviewing or cognitive behavioural therapy.
- Basic Food Hygiene.
- Experience in student training.
- Experience of working with wider multidisciplinary team towards a shared purpose/goal.
- Proficient use of Electronic Patient Records.
