University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is recruiting for a senior dietetic role within the Renal Nutrition and Dietetic Service at Glenfield Hospital. The post holder will deliver an evidence-based Dietetic & Nutrition Service for adult renal care, supporting consultants and providing continuity of care across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

They will work with Senior Specialist Dietitians, manage complex cases, contribute to multidisciplinary groups, and drive service development

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert dietetic input into adult renal care, including nephrology/pre-dialysis, end stage renal disease, and renal transplantation.
  • Independently manage adult dietetic caseloads with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Deliver evidence-based dietetic and nutrition services across hospital and satellite units within Leicestershire.
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary teams to integrate nutrition care into patient treatment plans and policies.
  • Lead and participate in CPD, clinical supervision, and service development initiatives.

Job description

To work as a member of the Renal Nutrition and Dietetic Service team based at Glenfield Hospital. You will be supported by Senior Specialist Dietitians within this area. To be responsible for the development and provision of a high quality, evidence based, effective Dietetic & Nutrition Service, for adult dietetic care in the speciality area of renal disease (part of the Renal Respiratory Cardiovascular and Vascular (RRCV) Clinical Management Group (CMG). To provide a Dietetic & Nutrition Service to adult patients and their families and carers whilst on under the care of Consultants. The post holder will also provide continuity of care across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland healthcare community, and advise other dietitians and healthcare professionals on nutrition and diet matters. The post holder will deliver a high quality, evidence based Dietetic and Nutrition Service to include in and outpatients in all areas of adult renal dietetics - nephrology/pre dialysis, end stage renal failure on renal replacement therapy and renal transplantation. It may involve travel to a Satellite Renal Unit within Leicestershire to provide a dietetic service. To manage the adult dietetic caseloads with varying degree of nutritional complexity, without direct supervision and whilst exercising a large degree of autonomy. To be an expert in adult dietetic care within the Dietetic and Nutrition team and Service, and inform other dietitians within the team and service of developments in these fields. To be responsible for dietetic and nutrition input into multi-professional groups and staff, and policy development within patient care. To provide nutrition and dietetic input into all areas of the Adult Renal Speciality

  • The post holder will use advanced skills and extensive clinical and biochemical knowledge to diagnose malnutrition, malabsorption, dehydration / mineral / electrolyte abnormalities, which require dietetic intervention, to independently provide and instigate a nutritional care plan, without direct supervision.
  • To be responsible for direct recommendation of inpatient prescription of nutritional products, including designing the composition of inpatient and outpatient orders, without direct supervision.
  • The post holder will use advanced skills to support/inform the multi professional team in the decision process, on emotive subjects such as the ethical decisions whether to provide nutrition and diet therapy /withhold diet treatment and the risk/benefits within a legal context.
  • To liaise with the Leicestershire Home Enteral Service, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust regarding discharge planning, in accordance with established procedures, and on-going monitoring of patients requiring home enteral feeding.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that appropriate advice is given to relevant services / teams / departments in order that an individual's nutrition and dietary needs are met (e.g. catering for people in hospital).
  • To be an expert user of anthropometric and feeding equipment e.g. skin folder caliper, hand grip dynometer.
  • To attend Board/ Ward rounds, case conferences and multi-professional meetings in order to provide expert nutrition and diet advice regarding provision of nutrition and diet treatment based on clinical evidence.
  • To provide nutritional and dietetic counselling and use different techniques to educate the diverse and multicultural nutrition team population to understand the long term complex dietary changes which are needed and to employ motivational and behavioural change skills to overcome barriers to change, particularly where there is non-compliance.
  • Ability to utilise communication and education skills to educate patient with disabilities (e.g. profound communication problems, learning disabilities) who may have barriers.
  • To be the operational lead for the adult dietetic team to represent the Dietetic and Nutrition Service at relevant local groups in specific areas, e.g. at Trust and dietetic level.
  • To be the adult dietetic team operational lead and liaison point for catering, pharmacy, and education and training on a rotational basis, feeding back to the Speciality Clinical Lead and to the service on a regular basis.
  • To take a lead in clinical supervision, mentoring and CPD activities within the nutrition and dietetic team.
  • To contribute to service developments / initiatives as part of the strategic vision for the Dietetic and Nutrition Service, and developing local policy for service delivery.
  • To be responsible for the production and review of clinical guidelines, clinical audit and specific projects to inform best practice / evidence-based practice.
  • To be responsible for the production and review of Dietetic and Nutrition Service patient information/literature and resources to ensure that this is non-biased and best practice / evidence-based practice.
  • To encourage and promote needs assessment in order to deliver and evaluate programmes to support motivation in patients / groups to facilitate dietary change (e.g. one-to-one, group sessions).
  • To ensure collection of accurate statistical information and to ensure that recording systems are completed according to Dietetic and Nutrition Service standards.
  • To work in accordance with competencies, recognise own limitations and the need to seek support from other members of the team.
  • To promote safe caseload / workload management, using appropriate assessment, organisational, time management and reporting skills.
  • To contribute to clinical supervision and CPD activities, in the context of adult care.
  • To assist the Dietetic Manager in the strategic development of Dietetic and Nutrition Services.
  • To contribute to clinical audit / projects, on behalf of the Dietetic and Nutrition Service and ensure results are shared and acted upon.
