Job summary

Mercator Group is seeking a Software Developer (Java) for their Crowborough office. In this role, you will design and optimise cloud infrastructures, primarily using AWS, and work closely with client teams to deliver impactful digital services.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for an experienced and motivated DevOps Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this crucial role you will design, automate, and optimise cloud infrastructure s for our clients. The successful candidate will have strong hands‑on experience with AWS, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Linux, and Python scripting to support modern CI/CD and deployment practices across our environments.

What You’ll Do
  • Report to the Head of Development, providing key operational information about projects.
  • Help nurture our thriving tech community, working closely with our Community Manager.
  • Evangelise DevOps and promote best practice across all our technical teams.
  • Participate in the wider technical communities of service (inside and outside of Mercator), building relationships, sharing agile best practice and knowledge.
  • Build resilience and responsiveness in the organisation by being open and honest about risks and challenges and the actions required to address unexpected developments.
  • Keep continually abreast of changes to user habits, preferences and behaviours across various digital platforms and their implications for successful delivery of digital services.
  • Assist the Senior Leadership Team with bids and tenders.
Within Our Clients You Will:
  • Work with the client team to create and deliver outstanding digital services that meet well‑defined user needs.
  • Work with the Product Manager to develop the overall technical construct of the product being developed.
  • Use agile methodologies and handle near‑term and long‑term priorities, work with your Agile Delivery Manager/Scrum Master to maximise visibility of those plans and enable your team to release frequent service improvements that deliver real value for users.
  • Direct the development of user‑driven prototypes to test potential new features with users to explore potential improvements to existing products.
  • Prioritise and maintain the product backlog, collaborating with Business Analysts and Developers to create and refine user stories that deliver service improvements for users.
  • Ensure that you maximise take‑up of your digital service, identifying and meeting assist‑ed digital requirements.
  • Strong experience with AWS cloud services (EC2, ECS/EKS, S3, IAM, RDS, CloudWatch).
  • Proven knowledge of Terraform for infrastructure provisioning.
  • Proficiency with Linux system administration.
  • Hands‑on experience with Docker and Kubernetes in production.
  • Python scripting for automation and DevOps tooling.
  • Understanding of CI/CD workflows and version control systems (e.g., GitHub, GitLab).

Nice to Haves

  • Exposure to Microsoft Azure or multi‑cloud environments.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK Stack.
  • Familiarity with Ansible or other configuration management tools.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments.
  • Experience with serverless architectures (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions).
