Job description

AXA is a global leader in insurance and financial services, dedicated to helping customers protect what matters most to them. As the sixth-largest insurance company in the world, we provide a wide range of services, including health, car, home, and business insurance. We support millions of customers worldwide, helping them navigate life's uncertainties with confidence.

AXA Commercial protects businesses, from multinationals to micro start-ups, giving them the confidence to thrive.

Job overview:

As a P&C Development Underwriter, you’ll play a vital role in transforming how we partner with broker portfolios, fostering responsive, flexible, and collaborative relationships. Ideal for an experienced senior underwriter ready to take the next step, this role suits someone with a strong technical underwriting and trading background, eager to develop leadership, strategic thinking, and market influence. While technical expertise is valued, we welcome diverse candidates with the passion and potential to grow into this pivotal position.

You’ll have the autonomy to make impactful underwriting decisions, focusing on profitable growth across new business in the Scottish market. Working in a dynamic, collaborative environment, supported by a dedicated team, you’ll also travel within Scotland to build local relationships and deepen regional market insights.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven underwriter looking to elevate their career, influence market strategies, and make a real impact within a forward-thinking organisation. If you’re passionate about shaping the future of insurance underwriting and thrive in a role blending technical skill with strategic growth, we’d love to hear from you!

Key responsibilities:
  • Act as the face of AXA in presenting propositions for larger Mid-Market and Mid–Corporate risks, based on industry knowledge and technical underwriting expertise, subject to the scale and complexity of the case.
  • Work with Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, wordings and pricing that differentiate AXA to meet customer needs.
  • Proactively develop a robust pipeline of Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate qualified growth opportunities leveraging both client and broker relationships, ensuring pipeline is effectively managed and realised.
  • Lead and fully embed the large case management process for new business.
  • Develop and build collaborative broker relationships, sometimes client, across the Region, taking full ownership for the generation, placement and retention of profitable commercial business from self-sourced.
  • Underwrite profitable new and existing business, in line with AXA established underwriting controls and practices and act as a referral point in branch.
  • Develop and maintain a quality distribution strategy and communication plan with key influential brokers to ensure financial KPIs achieved.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the performance of regions’ book (COR, Rate, Retention etc).
Work arrangements:

At AXA we work smart, empowering our people to balance their time between home and the office in a way that works best for them, their team and our customers. You'll work at least three days a week (60%) away from home. Away from home means attending the office, visiting clients or attending industry events.

For this particular role, the minimum requirement to be based from the Glasgow office is two day per week. The other day away from home could be out in the market visiting brokers and so the role may suit a candidate living slightly further away from the city centre including Perth or Dundee. We’re also happy to consider flexible working arrangements, which you can discuss with Talent Acquisition.

Your skills & experience:
  • Expert property and casualty technical underwriting knowledge in the Scottish market.
  • Record of securing and retaining business of large scale and complex business through developed senior broker/customer relationships.
  • Evidence of previous technical and sales experience extending to effective pipeline management.
  • Insight development, customer and broker portfolio relationship management.
  • Personal impact and influence, with negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • DIP Qualified or equivalent (or a commitment to obtain) with a proven track record in underwriting Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate business.

As a precondition of employment for this role, you must be eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.

This position has been defined as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime which means that in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will be subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years.
