Job summary

Empowering Learning Ltd is seeking a hands-on Design Technology Technician in Crawley to support a busy DT department. You will assist teachers and pupils in practical lessons, maintain tools and equipment, and ensure a safe, well-organised workshop environment.

Ideal candidates will have practical DT workshop experience, knowledge of materials and safety procedures, and the ability to manage stock and assist with lesson setup and breakdown. DBS check will be required.

Qualifications

• Practical DT technician/workshop experience is essential.
• Knowledge of resistant materials, woodwork or product design required.
• Solid understanding of workshop health and safety procedures.
• Able to maintain and operate DT machinery, power and hand tools.
• Organised, reliable and proactive.
• Good communication and positive attitude.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, maintain and organise tools, equipment and materials across DT areas.
• Support teachers in delivering practical lessons and demonstrations.
• Keep workshop safe, clean and well-stocked at all times.
• Carry out routine maintenance and basic repairs on DT machinery.
• Conduct and review risk assessments per health and safety guidelines.
• Monitor stock levels and liaise with the department lead to place orders.
• Assist students with practical tasks under the class teacher direction.
• Set up and clear equipment before and after lessons.

About the Role

We are working with an amazing secondary school in Crawley to find a skilled and enthusiastic Design Technology Technician. Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, maintain and organise tools, equipment and materials across resistant materials, textiles and graphics areas
• Support teachers in the delivery of practical lessons and hands-on demonstrations
• Ensure the workshop and preparation areas are safe, clean and fully stocked at all times
• Carry out routine maintenance and basic repairs on DT machinery and equipment
• Conduct and review risk assessments in line with health and safety requirements
• Monitor stock levels and liaise with the department lead to place orders as needed
• Support students with practical tasks under the direction of the class teacher
• Assist with the setup and clear-down of equipment before and after lessons

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Practical experience in a DT technician, workshop or similar technical role
• Working knowledge of resistant materials, woodwork or product design
• Strong understanding of workshop health and safety procedures
• Ability to maintain and operate DT machinery, power tools and hand tools
• Organised, reliable and able to use own initiative
• Good communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude

Desirable:

• Previous experience working in a school or educational setting
• Knowledge of textiles, graphics or food technology
• Relevant technical qualification (NVQ, BTEC or equivalent)
• Experience supporting students directly in a classroom or workshop setting
• Enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply for one)
