AtkinsRéalis UK Limited is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead water infrastructure design teams across the UK. You will ensure high‑quality, compliant designs from concept to delivery and act as a technical mentor within a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment.

You will oversee deliverables, drive complex design inputs, and collaborate with clients and internal teams. A focus on safety, innovation and meeting project milestones will be essential, with hybrid working and clear

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering required; Chartered status desirable.
• Proven experience leading design teams within consultancy and multi‑disciplinary projects.
• Knowledge of CDM, Eurocodes, NEC and water industry requirements.
• Ability to develop innovative, practical solutions to complex engineering challenges.
• Strong risk management and change control understanding with commercial awareness.

We offer hybrid working which involves 3 days per week being office/site based. This position is based in our Manchester, London, Peterborough, Cambridge, Cardiff, Swansea, Derby, Leeds, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow Offices.

Your role

Lead and coordinate engineering teams to deliver high-quality water and wastewater infrastructure designs in line with relevant standards and project requirements.

Oversee the production and review of technical deliverables, including reports, drawings, calculations, and scopes of work.

Drive technical design inputs on complex multi-disciplinary projects while managing programme milestones, timeframes, and budgets.

Collaborate closely with clients, operational teams, project managers, and wider AtkinsRéalis teams to achieve successful project outcomes.

Mentor and support junior engineers, helping to develop technical capability within the local team.

Work independently, applying professional judgement to solve complex engineering challenges and provide technical guidance to others.

Support bid submissions, contribute to integrated design solutions with UK and international teams, and ensure compliance with quality assurance and design review processes.

About you

Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) with Chartered/Incorporated status, or the capability to achieve ICE chartership within 12 months.

Strong experience leading engineering design teams within consultancy and multi-disciplinary project environments across the full project lifecycle.

Ability to develop innovative, practical solutions to complex engineering and design challenges.

Sound knowledge of risk management, quality assurance, change control, commercial considerations, and multi-disciplinary design coordination.

Good understanding of relevant design standards, regulations, and industry best practice, including CDM, Eurocodes, NEC, and water industry requirements.

Competent in engineering and project delivery tools, including AutoCAD, CDE platforms, Microsoft Office, Power BI, and other analytical software.

Self‑motivated and collaborative professional with strong communication skills, able to work independently, ensure safety compliance, and effectively engage with diverse project teams.
