Job description
About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Design Manager with strong expertise in High Voltage (HV) electrical systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to lead and coordinate design activities across multiple energy infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will oversee the development of design deliverables, ensure compliance with industry standards, and manage internal and external design resources to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the end-to-end design process for HV and BESS projects, from concept through to detailed design and construction handover.
  • Oversee the production of single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection coordination studies, earthing, and cable sizing calculations.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary design inputs (civil, structural, controls, and SCADA) to ensure seamless integration with electrical designs.
  • Ensure all designs comply with UK Grid Code, ENA standards, DNO/TSO requirements, and health and safety regulations.
  • Review and approve design documentation produced by internal engineers and external consultants.
  • Manage interfaces with clients, EPC contractors, and equipment suppliers to ensure design intent and technical requirements are met.
  • Support value engineering, risk assessment, and constructability reviews.
  • Lead design reviews and ensure all deliverables align with project schedules and budgets.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers and designers.
  • Support the connection application process and liaise with DNOs/TSOs for HV connections.
Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 8+ years' experience in electrical design management within power, renewable energy, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Proven experience in HV systems (11kV-400kV) design and BESS integration.
  • Strong understanding of power system studies (load flow, fault analysis, protection coordination).
  • Familiarity with DNO/TSO standards, ENA ER G99/G100, and Grid Code compliance.
  • Demonstrable experience managing multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Excellent understanding of design assurance, quality control, and documentation management systems.

Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration.
  • Experience with renewable energy projects (solar PV, wind, or hybrid systems).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or similar design tools.
  • Project management experience within EPC or developer environments
