Job summary

Glanua is recruiting a Design Manager to lead the wastewater treatment design team from concept to construction. You will work within a multi-disciplinary group and liaise with clients and consultants to deliver engineered, sustainable solutions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Construction Regulations 2013; PSDP coordination preferable.
  • Experience in civil and process engineering works (temporary works, earthworks, tanks, buildings, process units and M&E).
  • Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with clients to develop design solutions.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office and project planning software; ability to prepare baseline programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design team and any appointed consultants across all design scope.
  • Develop and monitor a design budget and track expenditure.
  • Represent the company at design reviews and HAZOPs; close actions timely.
  • Coordinate PSDP and ensure risk assessment of designs communicated to PSCS.
  • Drive design programme development and updates to meet project outcomes.
  • Mentor staff and participate in recruitment within the team.
  • Address client and stakeholder feedback to improve design delivery.

Design Manager - Wastewater Treatment Projects
The Role:

As Design Manager, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to bring water and wastewater infrastructure projects from project brief stage to the detailed design stage and into Construction. You will lead a team of multi-disciplinary engineers and appointed consultants to successfully bring projects from concept to the implementation stage. You will lead in a one-team culture while actively contributing to your own skills and experience. Your role will be key in supporting the Operations Manager to achieve the transition of projects from design into the construction phase. Due to the nature of the works completed by Glanua you will have an opportunity to witness a wide variety of multi-disciplinary engineering activities and will have the opportunity to focus and develop a specialised knowledge base and progress your career, with a wide variety of career paths available. In this Client facing role you will liaise directly with the Client and their representatives to develop engineered solutions fostering innovation and sustainability at their core.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The main duties and responsibilities of the Design Manager are outlined as follows:
  • Work as part of a team in the delivery of one or more projects at any one time, embracing the ethos of a “one team” culture.
  • Ensure Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability standards, policies and procedures are developed into the proposed designs.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with all key stakeholders including clients, client representatives and third-party agencies.
  • Ensure a positive experience for the client and their representatives instilling an ethos of collaboration and cooperation.
  • Lead the design team and any appointed consultants in all aspects of the design scope.
  • Develop a design budget at outset and monitor expenditure going forward against budget.
  • Represent the company at design review workshops and HAZOPs, ensuring all resulting actions are closed in a timely manner.
  • Co-ordinate the role of PSDP for the design phase, ensuring best practice principles of prevention are adopted. Coordinate all designers and ensure all designs are risk assessed and any residual risks are communicated to the PSCS.
  • Ensure best practice design management ensuring design programme is developed at the start of each project and monitored throughout, adjusting as necessary to meet the desired project outcomes.
  • Monitor project performance including risk and opportunities. Mitigate/reduce risk where possible and manage opportunities.
  • Report on the monthly performance of your projects to the framework manager including performance against programme, key milestones and workshop stages.
  • Prepare costed proposals for final design or at intervals as may be required under the Contract. Ensure all engineering disciplines are consulted to ensure an accurate and complete project cost build-up.
  • Provide a review of final design and contract documentation and provide feedback on red-line documents.
  • Build and promote industry-leading teams by providing training and mentoring of staff including setting out development plans for your team.
  • Provide an active involvement in resource management and recruitment within your team as a hiring manager.
  • Respond to and address any client and stakeholder complaints in a timely manner. Obtain client satisfaction surveys and provide any feedback on how to improve our client satisfaction.
  • Seek to improve the design delivery process by providing lessons learned feedback and innovative solutions for adoption on future projects.
  • Keep appraised of the latest standards and technology through continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Other duties as required from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Design Manager are outlined as follows:
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Holder of a certificate in Designing Safely for Construction and/or PSDP Co-ordination preferable.
  • Experienced in civil and process engineering works such as temporary works, bulk earthworks, tank systems (precast & in-situ), building works, process units and M&E Installations.
  • Minimum of a Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering.
  • Ability to work under pressure to deliver project objectives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the client and their representatives in leading and developing design solutions.
  • Good working knowledge of programme management software such as Microsoft Project. Ability to prepare baseline programmes and programme updates.
  • Ability to use own initiative, problem solve and adjust as issues arise during project delivery.
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS packages such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Project.
  • Strong communication skills with a high level of motivation.
  • Full Driving License.
