Job description
Overview

Costain are working with Thames Water on a variety of water and wastewater projects and have opportunities for individuals to join our growing AMP8 delivery team, primarily across the Thames Valley and Thames South regions. Projects range from smaller capital maintenance to large civil new build schemes. Design Managers are project based, part of the project team delivering the design and engineering aspects of our projects. This may include delivering design management on major bids.

As a Design Manager, you are accountable for all design for a scheme (on a framework) or a section of a major project. You will manage the relevant designers on your project, ensuring design is delivered on time, within budget and technically compliant. All designs must be safe, sustainable and efficient to construct. You will work within a team of design managers on major projects or framework schemes and report to a Principal or Senior Design Manager as part of a wider team.

Responsibilities
  • Be a key member of a major project\'s design team (or lead small design teams on framework schemes), collaborating with the client, consultants, construction staff and supply chain. Be the design package manager for your scheme.
  • Understand our design and engineering needs so they are well-defined, including the scope split between design stages and designer organisations. Work to the Design Management Plan and other control documentation. Support the PDM/SDM in producing these as required.
  • Manage the detailed integrated design and procurement programme, ensuring robust monitoring of design delivery. Collate and report on design progress and technical risks regularly.
  • Set out clear deliverables and measurable outcomes for design stages in the lifecycle and determine when designs are complete. Review deliverables for acceptance when required.
  • Check that incoming designs are quality controlled, technically assured and of sufficient detail for the design stage and purpose.
  • Control design change and escalate contemporaneously. Contribute to and review commercial correspondence related to design.
  • Ensure designs are constructable, follow safe-by-design principles and achieve sustainability goals, including reporting carbon metrics as required.
  • Provide judgement and advice on design solutions to meet project requirements and commercial aims. Engage regularly with project procurement and construction teams during design development and options selection.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • Engineering or management experience in infrastructure or related industry with a demonstrable track record of achievement
  • Knowledge of at least one design and construction process model (e.g. plan of work)
  • Practical, methodical approach with a creative and innovative mindset
  • Experience of technical management, ability to review design deliverables and prepare reports
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to influence

Desirable

  • Experience of managing large amounts of design change
  • Understanding of Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) and design workflows
  • Basic legal, contractual and construction knowledge
  • Confidence to assert influence and facilitate collaborative solutions
  • Experience drafting contractual correspondence and facilitating teamwork
  • Basic negotiating and team-working skills
Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor\'s degree or Engineering/management apprenticeship with industry experience

Desirable

  • Chartered member of a professional institute (MICE/IMechE/MCIOB, etc.)
  • Related Project Management or Risk Management training
