Job Title: Design Engineer

Salary: £47,615 - £65,000, depending on experience

Location: Wimborne, Dorset

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual with a passion for progression to join our Engineering design team at the Caterpillar Marine facility in the UK. Our Wimborne facility is responsible for the design, manufacture, sales & support of all Caterpillar Marine products up to 500 bhp for propulsion and 200 ekW for the genset range.

The team has responsibility for all areas of the engine & genset design, with particular focus on fuel system, electrical system, cooling system and structural components as well as working directly with global colleagues on the core engine component selection.

Within this design role you will work on internal and external customer projects, including new product introductions, current product maintenance, cost‑reduction activities and supplier development opportunities.

What You Will Do
  • Concept through to detailed design of new and innovative solutions which are validated to meet functional and technical requirements
  • Make calculations and design decisions with necessary analysis
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure the design and drawings meet our exacting engineering standards
  • Work directly with global teams, suppliers, customers and production facilities to define problems and collaborate to reach solutions
  • Effectively communicate technical information, project updates and challenges in a succinct and accurate manner to diverse audiences
What You Will Demonstrate

Degree Requirement: Degree required

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems – Level Extensive Experience

Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviours – Level Working Knowledge

  • Good communication skills, good organizational and time management skills.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self‑management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation – Level Working Knowledge

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges – Level Working Knowledge

  • Experience of product in the Marine environment to include diesel engines
  • Geometric Dimensions & Tolerancing to ASME Y14.5

Computer‑Aided Design & Engineering: Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyse, simulate and test product design drafts – Level Extensive Experience

  • The ability to conceive product designs and prepare design models.
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo or other modelling or simulation tools.

Product Design – MFG: Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design – Level Extensive Experience

  • Requires a good knowledge of mechanical design and computer aptitude.

Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production – Level Working Knowledge.

  • The ability to work independently by applying the theory and knowledge learned.

  • FEA Simulation – Modal & Static analysis
  • Light Fabrication Design. Sheet steel material specification, forming, bending, and welding knowledge
  • Previous experience of Siemens Teamcenter & Visualisation tools
