About the Role

Talented People are recruiting on behalf of a leading civil engineering contractor for a skilled Design Engineer to join their Technical Services team. This role focuses on developing temporary and permanent works designs to support construction across heritage, marine, fluvial and complex civil engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce safe, practical temporary works designs including shoring, propping, cofferdams and access structures.
  • Prepare design briefs, calculations, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Review designs for compliance with BS 5975, CDM 2015 and project requirements.
  • Provide on‑site technical support and resolve design‑related issues during construction.
  • Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators, site teams, subcontractors and consultants.
  • Integrate temporary works into overall construction plans and project sequencing.
  • Develop bespoke engineering solutions for heritage and complex environments.
  • Identify and mitigate design‑related risks and ensure adherence to safety legislation.
  • Use AutoCAD and structural analysis software to produce design outputs.
  • Support BIM workflows and Common Data Environment processes.
  • Contribute to technical assurance, design reviews and internal standards.
  • Attend planning meetings and maintain strong working relationships with project teams.
Skills & Knowledge Required
  • Strong understanding of structural engineering and temporary works principles.
  • Knowledge of BS 5975, CDM 2015 and UK construction legislation.
  • Ability to produce and interpret technical drawings and engineering calculations.
  • Experience in marine, fluvial or heritage construction environments (advantageous).
  • Excellent communication and collaborative working skills.
  • Practical site knowledge and an understanding of buildability.
Experience Required
  • 3‑5 years' experience in civil or structural engineering.
  • Strong background in temporary works design.
  • Experience working on live construction sites.
  • Exposure to heritage, marine, or water control projects desirable.
Technology Skills
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and structural analysis software (e.g., Tedds, Tekla/TSD, Robot).
  • Confident using Microsoft 365.
  • Familiarity with BIM platforms (Procore, Aconex, ProjectWise).
Training & Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Working towards ICE or IStructE professional status beneficial.
  • CDM 2015 designer risk management training desirable.
  • Temporary Works Coordinator awareness desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence essential.
