Job Summary

We are recruiting a Band 6 deputy ward manager for Wisteria Ward and supporting Wisteria annexe at Springfield Hospital. If you are a forward‑thinking experienced band 5/6 nurse looking to become an expert within a leading CAMHS inpatient eating disorder service, this is an exciting opportunity to consider. This is an exciting time to join the team, we've recently had a very successful CQC inspection, and we are preparing to move into a newly refurbished inpatient ward co‑designed with our CYP. The post will enhance your skills in leadership, management, specialist assessment of mental health and physical health needs, therapeutic engagement, crisis management and joint working with multiple agencies/services. We are looking for someone who is clinically competent with the appropriate skills to lead a diverse and experienced team.

You will work closely with the ward manager, cover in the absence of the ward manager, lead on QII projects and service improvement. We offer bespoke training; NG feeding, sickness management training. Staff are actively encouraged and supported to focus on their CPD to support the development of their skillset and enable more effective patient care and engagement.

As a deputy ward manager with us, you will develop a thorough understanding of the CAMHS inpatient eating disorder model, take a lead on quality improvement projects and embed these into daily practice. You will support with recruitment, supervision, PADR and monitor its effectiveness. You will ensure care delivered is reflective of evidence‑based practice and research within the framework of clinical governance. You will support the ward manager to manage complaints, compliments and keep the team ready for CQC. You will be present, accessible and supportive, and will train junior staff and support their development. You will work autonomously within the parameters of the role, leading and supporting junior staff and the wider care team to implement the delivery of quality nursing care, contributing to the physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual care in a recovery‑focused way through therapeutic engagement and activities, and taking steps to address any issues that arise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead on and undertake activities to ensure that the fundamentals of care are met – nutrition, hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support.
  • Co‑ordinating and evaluating collaborative patient‑centred care; getting feedback and improving plans with the multi‑disciplinary team (MDT).
  • Providing accurate information about care in an accessible format to patients and their relatives / carers.
  • Liaising and working positively with members of the multi‑disciplinary team and partner organisations.
  • Administering, and monitoring the side‑effects of, medication; monitoring service‑user compliance.
  • Ensuring safety – safe custody of medicines, sharps, clinical equipment, and reporting all incidents following trust policy.
  • Leading and supporting/teaching junior staff on risk assessment and risk management that involves making decisions based on knowledge of the research evidence, knowledge of the individual service user and their social context, knowledge of the service user’s own experience, and clinical judgement.
