Job description

The post holder will be a qualified nurse and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with an up-to-date PIN number.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development of programmes of care and their implementation and evaluation.

The post holder is also expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision, and will be required to demonstrate procedures to, and supervise qualified and unqualified staff.

The post holder will contribute to the overall good of the organisation by being a positive role model and to treat all staff, visitors and service users with courtesy.

The post holder will be allocated to Acute Assessment Unit.

It is expected that the post holder will be able to carry our all, of the duties listed in the main duty section below. The duties will vary from ward to ward, and they may carry out other similar duties in support of the ward environment that are not listed. No duties are to be undertaken by the post holder unless they have received the appropriate training.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to regularly co‑ordinate the ward, to support junior nurses co‑ordinating the ward.

The post holder will have a 'hands on' approach to assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care.

The post holder will act as a clinical resource for the ward team.

The post holder will encourage and promote the use of evidence based clinical nursing practice.

Managerial Responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Ward Manager in co‑ordinating the available unit resources to produce a cost effective and efficient care environment.

The post holder will assist the Ward Manager to ensure that all staff are working efficiently this includes bank and agency staff.

The post holder will ensure that all clinical practices are in accordance with NMC advisory documentation.

Educational Responsibilities

The post holder will acquire new skills and knowledge to enable new management systems to work e.g., computer skills, budget management.

The post holder will be able to identify their own educational needs with the Ward Manager.

The post holder will act as a mentor to all staff and as a preceptor to newly qualified staff.

The post holder will actively participate in teaching and supervision and direction of nurses.

The post holder will help plan the orientation of new staff.

The post holder is responsible for their own professional development, in line with NMC guidelines.

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will effectively communicate, on a daily basis, with patients and their relatives and ensure they are familiar with nursing medical goals and also the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will ensure that health education issues are addressed with patients, their relatives and staff.

The post holder will be actively involved in the promotion of written standards of care, their subsequent audit and on‑going development.

The post holder will continue to develop their cannulation and venepuncture skills in line with Trust guidelines.

The post holder will act as a positive role model.

The post holder will maintain a flexible approach to working hours in order to meet the needs of the service; this may include some night duty.

The post holder will ensure that systems operate that facilitate the safe and effective discharge of patients.

Managerial Responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Ward Manager in co‑ordinating the available unit resources to produce a cost effective and efficient care environment.

In conjunction with the Ward Manager, the post holder will ensure that information is disseminated across the unit staff.

In conjunction with the Ward Manager, the post holder will ensure that hospital policies and guidelines are available within the clinical area. The post holder will also ensure that all staff are aware of their availability and how to use them.

The post holder will ensure that the Trusts policies and procedures guide their own practice.

In the absence of the Ward Manager, the post holder will assume responsibility for the ward environment, ensuring that it is safe and clean, and equipment is maintained.

The post holder will ensure that all accidents/incidents are reported to the Unit Manager and in their absence to the matron.

The post holder will be able to deal with potential or actual complaints or report to the Ward Manager and in their absence to the Matron.

The post holder will maintain a Trust wide perspective of resource issues and when necessary, will allocate resources accordingly.

The post holder will undertake Individual Performance Review/Appraisal with a designated group of staff, and help develop staff P.D.P.

The post holder will operate within the wards philosophy of care.

The post holder will continue to support the Ward Manager with the development of clinical supervision.

The post holder may be required to provide senior nursing cover to the Medical Directorate.

Educational Responsibilities
