Job description

Deputy Nursery Manager – Shepherds Hill Nursery, London
Salary: from £30,000 | Hours: 40 per week

Are you an experienced Early Years professional ready to take the next step in your career? Shepherds Hill Nursery is seeking a passionate and dedicated Deputy Manager to join our close-knit team and help lead a truly unique outdoor learning environment in the heart of London’s countryside.

For nearly 20 years, we’ve championed the belief that the best classrooms don’t have walls. At Shepherds Hill, children explore, learn, and grow through nature, developing curiosity, confidence, and care for the world around them. If you share our love for the outdoors and our commitment to exceptional early years education, we’d love to hear from you.

About the Role

As Deputy Manager, you’ll work closely with the Nursery Manager to ensure the smooth daily running of the nursery, maintaining the highest standards of care and learning in line with the EYFS. You’ll help lead, inspire, and support the team to create an environment where every child thrives.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Manager in all aspects of leadership and operations, and acting as Manager in their absence.
  • Mentoring and developing staff through supervision, training, and team meetings.
  • Overseeing planning, observations, and assessments to deliver high-quality, child-centred learning.
  • Promoting safeguarding, health, and safety across the setting, and acting as (or supporting) the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Building strong, positive relationships with parents, carers, and external partners.
  • Maintaining accurate records, assisting with rotas, funding claims, and ensuring readiness for Ofsted inspections.
About You

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A Level 3 or higher qualification in Early Years/Childcare.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in an early years setting.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • A sound understanding of the EYFS and safeguarding practices.
  • A passion for outdoor learning and child-led play.

Desirable qualities include experience in a deputy or room leader role, knowledge of SEND, and a genuine enthusiasm for nature-based education.

We also offer opportunities for Forest School or outdoor learning training to help you grow alongside our children.
