Job description

Skift (verb) - origin: Nordic languages - meaning: Shift; transformation.

As the daily homepage for the world’s largest industry, we are the leading news source for travel executives. We’ve proven ourselves as the information and intelligence brand at the center of it all, monitoring the ever-evolving transformation into the future of travel.

Every day, our award-winning team of journalists provides pivotal media insights on key travel sectors - with marketers, strategists and technologists top of mind. In doing so, we decipher and define global travel trends through a combination of news, research, conferences, exclusive interviews, strategic sector-focused newsletters, and more.

Why This Role Matters

The Deputy Managing Editor is essential to Skift’s mission of providing the most timely, and insightful coverage of the global travel industry. With our audience spanning every corner of the world, this role ensures that Skift’s editorial engine is running at full strength during EMEA hours, a critical window for global news and market activity.

You’ll be the editorial anchor that keeps our daily publishing cycle sharp, consistent, and impactful. By elevating story quality, guiding reporters, and shaping pitches into compelling journalism, you’ll directly influence how executives, policymakers, and innovators understand the travel industry’s biggest trends.

This is a fully remote role within the UK region.

Some of What You’ll Do
  • Oversee daily publishing flow across Skift’s newsroom coordinating with editors and reporters worldwide.
  • Write Skift’s premiere daily newsletter, delivering a smart, conversational breakdown of the day’s top travel stories.
  • Assign, edit, and develop stories that reflect Skift’s signature style: authoritative, analytical, and rooted in the business of travel.
  • Shape pitches and guide reporters to frame stories with strong news judgment and clear editorial angles.
  • Copy-edit stories for accuracy, structure, style, and search performance.
  • Maintain and update the editorial calendar in consultation with the managing editor.
  • Serve as the managing editor’s backup, ensuring continuity across assignments, workflow, and decision‑making.
  • Assist with onboarding and training for new editorial hires and interns.
  • Recruit and manage freelancers, including assignments, deadlines, and invoicing process.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • 6–8 years of digital publishing experience.
  • Real interest in the business of travel.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience managing and collaborating with remote, distributed teams.
  • Proficiency in WordPress, HubSpot, and Google Workspace.
  • Experience working with both in-house editorial teams and freelancers.
  • Strong organization, the ability to juggle multiple deadlines, and comfort in fast‑paced environments.
  • Clear, confident communication and strong interpersonal skills.
How We Work

Even though we’re fully remote, our culture is tight‑knit, we show up for each other and collaborate like we’re in the same room (even if we’re on different continents). We’re curious, creative, and committed to doing meaningful work.
