Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor or extensive compliance experience in a regulated business.
  • In-depth knowledge of Money Laundering Regulations, Data Protection Laws, and SRA's Standards and Regulations.
  • Experience in claims and complaint handling.

Job description

Due to businesses growth and the ever changing compliance landscape, we are looking for a Deputy Head of Risk & Compliance to support the Head of Compliance with achieving the compliance strategy and managing day to day operations of the compliance function.

This role is vital in helping the company to achieve compliance and to avoid legal action, penalties, and/or sanctions for breaches of laws, regulations, industry standards, and internal policies and procedures.

The Deputy Head of Risk & Compliance role is primarily responsible for monitoring the company's legal and regulatory obligations, identifying continual improvement actions, and implementing changes. The risk and compliance solicitor will support drive forward development plans for risk and compliance, as well as providing an escalation point for other members of the team who are responsible for managing business as usual activities, such as complaints and breaches. The role will involve engagement at all levels, regulatory bodies, and external third parties.

The Deputy Head of Risk & Compliance is part of the compliance team and will report to the Head of Compliance. This role is based in our Derby office, working Monday to Friday 36.25 hours, and travel to our other offices may be required, occasionally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting the Head of Compliance in achieving compliance strategy and implementing objectives and initiatives.
  • Managing the day to day compliance operations and team members. Providing training and mentoring to other team members, where required.
  • To function as a technical expert and point of escalation for the Compliance team. Dealing with escalations which require a higher level of management and expertise such as complex compliance queries, incidents, and complaints. Ensuring all are managed in accordance with our internal procedures, are proactively managed. Where necessary, consulting with regulators and/or Legal Ombudsman to ensure the most favourable outcomes are achieved.
  • Managing risks particularly around ethical, regulatory, and professional conduct. Where necessary, updating risk registers and implementing risk control measures.
  • Overseeing and coordinating the company's annual policy reviews, every December.
  • Review and development of compliance policies, procedures, guidance, and training material.
  • Providing support for internal projects to ensure that our regulatory responsibilities are met.
  • Develop and ensure ongoing maintenance of policies, procedures, guidance, and training material.
  • Perform risk reviews and thematic reviews to identify risks and implement suitable controls to support our risk mitigation strategies.
  • Act as a deputy for the Head of Compliance and other team members during periods of absence.
  • Providing compliance guidance to the business on regulatory issues and professional ethics.
  • Leading on and supporting with continual improvement projects.
  • Horizon scanning of key legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Analysing risk and compliance information and producing reports.
  • Producing management and KPI information.
  • Ad hoc duties and projects as required by the Head of Compliance.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Ideally be be a qualified solicitor or have extensive compliance experience in a regulated business.
  • Have in depth knowledge of Money Laundering Regulations, Data Protection Laws, and SRA's Standards and Regulations.
  • Have extensive claims and complaint handling experience.
  • Have the ability to remain calm under pressure and make informed and reasonable decisions.
  • Be organised, process driven and analytical with a pragmatic approach to finding solutions.
  • Be highly self-motivated and comfortable with regular deadlines.
  • Requisite integrity and discretion to work with confidential information.
  • Have outstanding record keeping and written skills.
  • Be a good team player.
  • Be proficient in learning new systems.
  • Be competent user of Microsoft Office.
