Job Summary

JOB PURPOSE: The person appointed will support the Head of Area to lead the team of staff in the delivery, development and improvement of all learning programmes within their area.

Main Duties
  • Supporting the design and development of a wide FE curriculum that meets the needs of learners, supports growth, and enables them to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to progress into meaningful sustained destinations.
  • Managing and developing the implementation of FE curriculum assigned to create an outstanding learner experience.
  • Managing, motivating and developing an assigned team of staff, supporting their career journeys while championing a cycle of continuous improvement.
  • Working collaboratively with cross‑college FE and HE teams to ensure the wider knowledge, skills and behaviours learners need are planned and developed coherently (e.g. Maths, English, Careers, Personal Development, digital etc.).
  • Proactively reviewing and adapting the curriculum offer alongside the Head to reflect the requirements of external stakeholders, meeting the skills agenda.
  • Achieving key targets in FE attendance, achievement, retention, progression and student experience as set centrally and by the Head of Area.
  • Ensuring college protocols and awarding organisation requirements for assessment and internal verification are complied with to support outstanding levels of learner progress.
  • Identifying at‑risk learners and implementing effective strategies to mitigate them leaving programmes early together with the Head of Area.
General Duties
  • Monitoring timetabling for all areas of responsibility.
  • Coordinating full‑time and part‑time team members to ensure full utilisation and maximisation of teaching hours.
  • Managing staff absence effectively, ensuring coverage for assessment, teaching and learning to minimise impact on the learner experience.
  • Developing, approving and validating courses in response to student, employer and external body needs.
  • Line‑managing a team of staff, ensuring performance is reviewed in line with college performance management and appraisal protocols.
  • Supporting the development of high‑quality teaching, learning and assessment, including the implementation of developmental action plans for staff.
  • Providing reports, data and other information as required.
  • Ensuring the progress of learners is robustly monitored, developed and reported as per college protocols.
  • Implementing college policy for target setting and pastoral care of all learners within the faculty.
  • Ensuring attendance and learner behaviour standards are outstanding.
  • Ensuring IAG for prospective and existing apprentices is effective and leads to positive destination outcomes.
  • Ensuring college policies and procedures are fully adhered to by all staff and learners.
  • Assessing and/or teaching on appropriate apprenticeship framework, standards and full‑time courses.
  • Complying with information security requirements in line with Weston College policy.
  • Carrying out other duties as may be required by the Leadership Team.

Person Specification
Qualifications – Essential
  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and maths.
  • All applicants must be able to provide evidence of a Level 2 qualification in English and maths.
  • Vocational qualification at a minimum of Level 3, which is appropriate to the area.
  • Level 4 teaching qualification.
Desirable Qualifications
  • IQA qualification and evidence of CPD.
Essential Experience
  • A strong understanding of quality assurance processes.
  • Knowledge and experience of current teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
  • Experience in working effectively with employers/partners to develop current and new provisions.
  • A full understanding of the EIF and awarding organisation guidance and regulations.
  • A breadth of knowledge, understanding and professional experience of the area.
  • Experience of working with national governing or accrediting bodies.
  • Understanding of management information systems and their application.
  • Effective management skills and ability to lead and motivate a team effectively.
  • Relentless pursuit of excellence and willingness to challenge underperformance.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence a wide range of people.
  • Understanding of funding and strategic planning methodologies.
  • Evidence of working effectively with a wide range of stakeholders to meet the needs of learners.
