About our Team

Heliyon, an all-science, open access journal that is part of the Cell Press family, seeks a Deputy Editorial Team Leader for our team.

About the Role

This people leader role involves recruiting, training, and managing a team of (Senior) Editorial Section Managers and supporting a scientific journal. It offers skill development, collaboration, and exposure to the scientific community.

Responsibilities
  • Fully responsible for the people management of a global team of (Senior) Editorial Section Managers. This includes, but is not limited to recruitment, onboarding, training, target setting, coaching, development, completing employee performance evaluations and recommending pay decisions.
  • Coaching the team to be able to apply all workflows and standards efficiently so that they can move manuscripts through the peer review process in collaboration with editors and reviewers.
  • Supervises the team so that they work together effectively. Ensures priority setting and coordinates work activities and cover as appropriate.
  • Supports central workflows in the journal, such as interactions with external editors, authors, reviewers or post‑publication corrections.
  • Proactively evolves and documents workflows for the team.
  • Independently solves complex problems based on policies and procedures and contributes to the evolution of these.
  • Liaise with other roles, if needed from other teams, to develop the journal further.
Requirements
  • Have a scientific background in either the life/medical/social or physical sciences (MSc level or equivalent).
  • Have existing people leadership and (open access) publishing experience.
  • Be enthusiastic, analytical and have exceptional attention to detail.
  • Have excellent English language skills with a focus on building great relationships.
  • Show creativity, have a willingness to experiment, and a desire to improve.
  • Be able to adapt to managing an internal team, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously and treat people professionally. Work equally well collaboratively or independently in a deadline‑oriented environment.
  • Be technically savvy and must be PC proficient with expertise working in Microsoft Office 365 suite (particularly Outlook and Excel) with the ability and desire to grow beyond that.
  • Tableau, PowerBI, Confluence and Jira skills are a bonus.
