Job description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are looking for a deputy digital editor to support digital editors with day-to-day oversight of all GNM's digital content.

In addition, you’ll deputise for the head of digital (live) and in their absence, manage the team of homepage editors.

This is a 9-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, on a 9-day fortnight working pattern (including Saturdays).

About the role

  • Assist with running the day's digital output, working closely with desk editors and the digital editing team to respond in smart, imaginative ways to stories throughout the day.
  • Lead the digital desk on Saturdays to ensure our weekend online offering is well planned and promoted, as well as responding to live news as it happens
  • Manage the UK, Europe, and International homepages on a day-to-day basis.
  • Send breaking news alerts and oversee live blogs.
  • Work with design, visuals, video, community and audience teams to ensure the best possible expression of the Guardian's digital output.
  • Work with planning teams and different desks to schedule content and to ensure meticulous preparation for live events.
  • Attend planning and ideas meetings to ensure the Guardian's digital needs are reflected in commissioning decisions.
  • Attend meetings and work with colleagues in digital development to agree and shape plans to develop the Guardian's digital storytelling.
  • Understand targets and metrics and build them into balanced editing judgments.

About you

  • Significant experience of a live newsroom, ideally at a national or international news organisation
  • Strong understanding of content management systems (CMS), digital publishing, and analytics tools (e.g. Ophan)
  • Experience of editing homepages and articles
  • Understanding and knowledge or analytics, search and other measurements of digital audience and targets
  • Strong record of creativity and innovation in digital journalism
  • Proven track record of using social media channels to engage diverse audiences, adapt stories for platform-specific formats, and drive digital reach
  • Clear vision of the purpose and aims of the Guardian
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King's Cross in London.

The minimum salary for this NUJ position starts from £63,712, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.

Benefits at the Guardian

  • You’ll have six weeks of annual leave per year pro rata (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase an additional 5 days.
  • Our pension scheme is generous; if you contribute 5% then we will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age).
  • We believe in giving back, which is why employees are given 2 volunteering days annually and the option of payroll giving.
  • Season ticket loans are also available.
  • You are entitled to life cover, income protection, and eye tests.
  • You can also opt in to dental insurance.
  • We have enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave policies in place.
  • We also support our employees by offering an IVF, menopause, baby loss, and trans equality policy.
