Deputy Director of Finance – Financial Services, Capital, and Payroll

Salary: Executive and Senior Managers Grade E £96,982 – £124,871 per annum (pro‑rated for part time)

The Role

Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the post holder will provide strategic and professional leadership across NHSGGC’s Financial Accounting, Capital, and Payroll functions.

You will be responsible for leading the continuous development and improvement of the organisation’s financial services, ensuring that all statutory, regulatory, and professional standards are met across financial accounting, fixed assets, treasury management, endowment accounting, and financial control.

  • Financial Accounting – lead the function, ensuring best practice in governance, compliance, and reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation, audit and submission of the Board and Group Statutory Annual Accounts, Healthcare Charity Accounts, and Private Patients’ Funds.
  • Capital Finance and Infrastructure – lead the function, ensuring a robust approach to planning, prioritisation and appraisal of capital investment.
  • Payroll – manage the function, ensuring efficient, accurate and compliant delivery.
  • Oversee Corporate Risk Management and report to the Audit Committee and Risk Management Steering Group.
  • Act as lead interface for Internal and External Audit, ensuring effective planning, governance and delivery of the audit programme.
  • Deputise for the Director of Finance in all delegated financial matters, both internally and externally.
About You

You will be a qualified CCAB or CIMA accountant with substantial post‑qualification experience in a senior finance leadership role within a large, complex organisation, ideally within the NHS or wider public sector.

  • Proven track record of strategic financial leadership, including financial accounting, audit, capital planning and payroll management.
  • Deep technical expertise in financial governance, statutory accounting and capital finance.
  • Exceptional analytical, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior clinicians, executives and external stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to NHS Scotland’s core values of care and compassion, dignity and respect, openness, honesty and responsibility, quality and teamwork.
  • The ability to inspire, develop and lead teams to deliver excellence in a complex and fast‑moving environment.
