Job summary

A leading engineering consultancy in Reading is seeking a Level 6 Apprentice Building Services Design Engineer for summer/autumn 2026. This role offers hands-on experience in designing mechanical and electrical systems for various projects. Your role:

Are you passionate about engineering and eager to contribute to sustainable building design? We are seeking a motivated and talented individual to join our team as a Level 6 Apprentice Building Services Design Engineer, starting in summer/autumn 2026. This exciting opportunity will provide you with hands‑on experience and academic qualifications to launch a successful career in Electro‑Mechanical engineering.

Based in our Reading office, you will gain hands‑on experience in designing mechanical and electrical systems for a variety of projects, from urban regeneration to commercial, leisure, and educational facilities. You will utilize state‑of‑the‑art BIM technology to create innovative and energy‑efficient solutions, aligning with the latest industry standards and sustainability practices.

As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced engineers to design heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems, while considering factors such as energy efficiency, occupant comfort and environmental impact.

You will also be exposed to a range of other engineering disciplines, including environmental modelling, building systems performance analysis, lighting design and environmental master planning.

Our apprenticeship program offers a unique blend of practical experience and academic study. You will pursue a degree in Building Services Design Engineering at the University of West England on day release, gaining a solid foundation in engineering principles and their application to real‑world challenges.

About you:

For our apprenticeships no previous experience is required. If you are self‑motivated, proactive and eager to learn then this could be for you.

Qualifications:
  • UCAS tariff points: 112 points minimum.
  • A level: BBC, including mathematics at grade B or above and one other analytical subject (also with a grade B).
  • Analytical subjects can include physics, biology/human biology, chemistry, computer science, further mathematics and design and technology.
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DMM; must include a Merit or above in Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Construction Units.
  • Scottish Highers: 4 SQA Higher - A, B, B, B (to include Mathematics).
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: (Highers) H3, H3, H3, H3, H3, H4 (at least H3 for Mathematics and one other Analytical Science).
  • International Baccalaureate: 32 points/655. HL5 in Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) and HL5 in another Science subject, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies.
  • GCSEs: At least 5 GCSEs with a grade of 5 or 6 (B) or above in Mathematics and English Language. Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Mathematics are also accepted. You must fulfil our GCSE entry requirements as well as one of the requirements listed above.
  • Other equivalent qualifications may be considered.
