Job summary

MBDA seeks a Materials specialist to join a dedicated team in Stevenage, supporting development of defence products. You will perform laboratory testing, analysis, and material investigations to ensure performance, reliability and cost targets are met.

Collaboration with UK and French colleagues, use of advanced facilities, and technical guidance on materials are key aspects. You will assess materials and processes, maintain lab safety, and produce concise technical reports aligned with DEF STAN

Qualifications

• Hands-on laboratory operations management experience.
• Experience in Aerospace or Defence Industry is advantageous.
• Assessment of materials to international standards including DEF STANs.
• Experience calibrating, troubleshooting and maintaining lab equipment.
• Experience supporting procurement and manufacture of engineering parts.
• Familiarity with certified quality management.
• Proficiency in lab and data analysis software (Excel, MATLAB).
• Strict adherence to lab safety protocols including PPE.
• Ability to document test procedures and write clear technical reports.

Responsibilities

• Conduct testing, inspection, and characterisation of metallic and non-metallic materials.
• Analyse material properties to support product design, manufacturing, and QA.
• Investigate material failures and support forensic engineering activities.
• Produce technical reports and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Assess new and emerging materials technologies and manufacturing processes.
• Provide guidance on hazardous materials, obsolescence and material selection.
• Review supplier and subcontractor processes and quality documentation.
• Use laboratory equipment including mechanical testing, microscopy, and analytical instruments.
• Support COSHH assessments, SOPs and continuous improvement initiatives.
