About us

Stanford RegLab is a social impact lab that partners with government and nonprofits to use machine learning and data science to modernize the public sector. Our interdisciplinary team includes lawyers, data scientists, social scientists, and engineers. Partners include EPA, IRS, DOL, and Santa Clara County Public Health.

As a Data Scientist, You Will
  • Support collection, management, and cleaning of data sets from regulatory agencies; build and document a data dictionary.
  • Produce reports and publications for government partners and academic audiences.
  • Work with PI and Research Director to ensure data management is clear, secure, and robust.
  • Train research fellows on best practices and technical skills.
Core Duties
  • Identify usable data and produce relevant reports, charts, graphs, and tables.
  • Design methods to validate data and ensure high quality products.
  • Collect, manage, and clean datasets using extraction and reporting programming languages.
  • Research and reconcile data discrepancies among information systems and reports.
  • Collaborate with data managers to define and implement data standards and common data elements.
  • Identify new data sources and methods to improve collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • May test prototype software and participate in approval and release process for new software.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

This one‑year fixed‑term position, with the option of renewal.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, mathematics, or engineering.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience using analytical software, database management systems, database reporting software, and data mining tools.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one programming language (Python, R, or SQL) and basic statistical ability.
  • Ability to collect data using a variety of methods, including data mining and documentation studies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline‑oriented environment; highly organized and detail‑oriented.
  • Ability to work with data of varying quality and validity.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Pay range: $82,468 to $106,256 per annum.
