Overview

National Grid is hiring a Data Science Manager to lead and develop our Data Science team. This role is based at our Warwick office, with hybrid working (1-2 days per week on-site). You will shape and deliver advanced data science solutions that support critical operations across our enterprise, driving innovation, scalability, and meaningful insights, with a focus on the energy transition.

Location and working pattern

Base location: NG House, Warwick. Hybrid/flexible working with travel to the office as per business need (approximately 1/2 day per week on average).

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a high-performing Data Science team, mentoring staff and guiding projects to deliver high-quality, impactful work.
  • Build advanced analytics and AI solutions using machine learning, statistical modelling, forecasting, and simulation techniques to solve complex, real-world challenges.
  • Unify data from multiple sources to create robust datasets that fuel insights and innovation.
  • Drive and deliver projects across the enterprise, collaborating with teams in the UK and US, and partner with Gas, Electric, and major support functions.
  • Translate technical concepts into clear business insights and recommendations for end users, peers, and senior leaders.
  • Stay curious and push boundaries by exploring new ideas, technologies, and approaches to shape the future of energy through data.
What you will do
  • Lead and inspire a team of Data Scientists, helping them grow their skills while driving high-impact work across the organisation.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of Data Science products and projects, from problem framing to deployment and impact measurement.
  • Develop and deploy reliable, scalable data solutions in cloud environments on Linux and/or Windows platforms (Azure experience is a plus).
  • Ensure experiments are properly designed with a hypothesis-driven mindset and appropriate evaluation.
  • Engage with stakeholders to understand needs, communicate findings, and influence decision-making.
  • Familiarity with interactive visualization tools (Power BI a plus) and GIS tools (ArcGIS).
Qualifications and experience
  • Demonstrable experience in Data Science, ideally with exposure to the utility or energy sector.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL; ability to build reliable, scalable solutions.
  • Experience delivering the full lifecycle of Data Science products and projects.
  • Experience working in regulated utility environments is desirable.
  • Experimental design experience and a hypothesis-driven mindset.
  • Fluency in Data Science techniques across statistics, machine learning, and GenAI.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-engagement skills across end users, peers, and senior leaders.
  • Knowledge of GIS tools (ArcGIS) and experience with interactive visualization tools (Power BI a plus).
Compensation and benefits
  • Competitive Salary: £78,000 - £91,000 per annum (based on capability and experience).
  • Annual performance incentive of up to 30% of eligible earnings.
