We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to take on the role of Data Protection Advisor, working within the Information Assurance team.

Policing holds vast amounts of data for law enforcement and operational purposes, but how that data is used and secured requires rigorous governance to ensure its retention and use is lawful, fair and proportionate and does not infringe on the rights and freedoms of individuals. In order to meet the organisation's strategic ambitions for the use of data, we have an Information Assurance function with responsibility for information governance, security, records management and data protection.

The role will provide professional guidance and specialist advice with regard to data protection compliance, ensuring that appropriate controls are identified and implemented to protect personal data and ensure the force is compliant with UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. You will also advise on and manage information security incidents and related governance and assurance documentation and reporting requirements.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as the designated specialist for data protection, providing expert advice to the Force on all aspects of data protection compliance
  • To assist departments with completing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new and changed uses of processing data
  • To investigate actual and suspected data breaches
  • To undertake data flow mapping exercises and maintain the Force Information Asset Register (IAR)
Special conditions:

Regular travel throughout Warwickshire.

Person Specification:
Knowledge:
  • Level 5, or equivalent, qualification.
  • To hold a recognised GDPR or data protection qualification
  • Demonstrable knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018 and other relevant legislation
  • Understanding and good working knowledge of information law and best practice standards relating to information management including APP Information Management, Data Protection, Information Sharing, Management of Police Information (MoPI) and Information Assurance (IA)
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding the key principles and requirements of Data Protection and how they apply to the policing environment
  • Understanding and good working knowledge of the key principles and requirements of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts and other records management legislation (including principles of both manual and electronic records)
  • Commitment to continuous professional development
Desirable:
  • Experience of data protection within a policing environment, to include compliance with Data Protection Act 2018 Part 3: Law Enforcement processing
  • Practitioner level qualification in GDPR/ Data Protection
Experience:
  • Experience of operating and contributing to data protection matters at a management level, identifying areas of improvement and implementing remedial action
  • Significant experience in providing expert data protection and privacy advice and direction to projects, activities, colleagues, and senior management in a complex organisation
  • Demonstrable experience of undertaking privacy and information risk assessment, and identifying controls required to comply with the law
  • Experience in facilitating and leading meetings with internal and external stakeholders at senior level.
  • Experience of liaising with other organisations and agencies, including regulatory bodies on data protection matters.
Key skills:
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, respond to changing demands and deliver efficient follow-ups.
  • Evidence of influencing through facts the motivation and behaviour of people both internally and externally.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to explain complex issues at a variety of levels.
  • Ability to be assertive and respectful when dealing with challenges
  • Ability to translate knowledge and experience into recommendations for the DPO and Chief Constable as the Data Controller
