Job summary

Alfred H Knight is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to join the Group IT team at the Prescot, Merseyside headquarters. You will design, build and support our modern data platform, focusing on SQL Server, semantic models and ETL/ELT pipelines to enable analytics across the AHK Group.

Reporting to the Data Engineering Lead, you will work in a collaborative environment modernising our data landscape, leveraging cloud architectures and ensuring data governance and security across worldwide

Qualifications

• Strong experience in T-SQL development on Microsoft SQL Server.
• Hands-on in designing, building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines (SSIS or equivalent).
• Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts and dimensional modelling.
• Experience supporting production data environments and enforcing data quality controls.
• Ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions and communicate with stakeholders.

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Data Platform Engineer to join our Group IT team at our global headquarters in Prescot, Merseyside.

Reporting directly to the Data Engineering Lead, you will design, build, and support our modern data platform solutions while taking hands-on responsibility for SQL Server environments, semantic models, and ETL/ELT pipelines. DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

To be successful at Alfred H Knight you will need to display the following:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Database & T-SQL Development: Strong experience in T-SQL development within Microsoft SQL Server, including query optimisation, performance tuning, and routine maintenance.
• Data Integration & Pipelines: Hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining robust ETL/ELT pipelines using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or equivalent tooling.
• Data Warehousing & Modelling: Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, relational database schema design, and dimensional modelling (e.g., star schemas).
• Data Quality & Production Support: Practical experience supporting production data environments, conducting root-cause issue resolution, and enforcing data validation and integrity controls.
• Collaborative & Solution-Focused: Proven ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions and communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Exposure to modern cloud data architectures, such as Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Warehousing) or Azure Data Factory. Understanding of medallion architecture (bronze/silver/gold layers) and modern data platform patterns.
• Experience developing or working with semantic models (e.g., Power BI / Microsoft Fabric) and Power BI reporting.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices, version control (Git), and Agile delivery methodologies.
• Understanding of data governance, security, and access control practices.

Required Qualifications

• Formal education to degree level in IT, Computer Science, Science, or Mathematics (or equivalent industry experience).
