Job description
About Us

At Oakland, we help businesses unlock the power of their data. Whether it's data strategy, governance, engineering, analytics, or AI, we work with our clients to turn data into real, impactful results. Our team is made up of friendly, hands-on experts who love solving problems and making a difference. We don’t just advise - we roll up our sleeves and get stuck in, working alongside our clients every step of the way.

Founded in 1986 out of our Leeds HQ, we work with a diverse range of clients across industries including Utilities, Telecommunications, Media, Financial Services, Public Sector, and more. Our projects range from multi-year data transformations to shorter-term assignments, so you’ll have opportunities to diversify your skillset.

We meet high standards for social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability. We believe businesses should be a force for good, so we make sure our decisions benefit our people, communities, and the planet.

We were named Best Consultancy to work for in the UK through Best Companies. We’re about creating an environment where people can grow, do meaningful work, and enjoy the journey.

In April 2025, Oakland was acquired by Softcat, a leading provider of IT infrastructure services to corporate and public sectors. By combining Oakland's data and AI consulting with Softcat's portfolio, we deliver value and innovation to our clients.

Hybrid working policy

We operate a hybrid working arrangement from our Head Office in Leeds. We support flexible working, but team members are expected to be in the office or with clients at least twice per week to stay connected and build strong relationships.

The role

We are looking for a Mid-Level Data Management Consultant to join our team. If you have foundational knowledge of data management concepts and believe that well-governed data leads to better performance, this role is for you.

As a Data Management Consultant, you will work closely with clients and internal teams to design and implement data management initiatives. Projects vary across industries.

Key responsibilities
  • People-focused Data Management – Arranging and running interviews and workshops to understand data problems and current data management practices.
  • Support Data Management Strategies – Help create and enforce data governance frameworks, policies, standards, and practices to ensure data quality, integrity, and security.
  • Data Ownership – Help appoint data owners and stewards and support them in adopting their roles.
  • Data Quality – Evaluate, improve, and monitor data quality and integrity to support decision-making.
  • Data Security – Monitor and ensure adherence to data regulations and standards, such as UK GDPR.
  • Data Lifecycle Management – Map the data lifecycle from creation to deletion, documenting issues, and recording information in data catalogues and glossaries.
  • Training and Education – Train staff on data management policies and procedures to ensure consistent understanding and application.
What we’re looking for

At mid-level, you are a consistent and reliable contributor within teams. This level is a step up from a Junior position. We support your development through The Oakland Academy and L&D benefits.

We’re open to candidates from diverse backgrounds. Key skills and experience include:

  • Experience implementing Data Management initiatives such as Data Quality, Data Security, Data Governance, or Data Lifecycle Management.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaboration abilities; able to explain technical problems to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical skills to document, assess, and improve data.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of how data impacts business success.
  • Broad understanding of technical data management capabilities (data modelling, integration, storage, etc.).
  • Awareness of data management tools and technologies (Purview, Erwin, Collibra, Informatica, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience implementing data policies and procedures.
  • Qualifications or certifications in Data Management (e.g., DAMA) are helpful but not essential.
Benefits

At Oakland, we take care of our people. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Health & Wellbeing – Private Healthcare from day one for you and your household, including dental cover and mental health support.
  • Discretionary Bonus – Reward for our collective success.
  • Generous Pension – 10% employer contribution and flexible options.

  • Family-Friendly Policies – Enhanced maternity/paternity/adoption and related support.
  • Time to Recharge – 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays; grows with tenure.
  • Learning & Development – Personalised development plans, certifications, The Oakland Academy, and a Personal Learning Budget.
