Job summary

The Independent is seeking a Data Engineer to join our data team in the UK. You will maintain and enhance our data infrastructure, optimize pipelines and support cross‑functional analytics initiatives.

The role focuses on building scalable data architectures as we expand in cloud solutions, particularly on Google Cloud Platform, and delivering reliable data for dashboards and business insights. Ideal candidates will have strong SQL skills, experience with both SQL and NoSQL, and hands‑on work

Qualifications

Strong SQL knowledge and hands-on experience with relational and non-relational databases.
Experience designing scalable data pipelines and architectures across web analytics and CMS data.
Proficient in ETL/ELT tooling and cloud data platforms to deliver timely datasets.

Responsibilities

Design and maintain robust, scalable data pipeline architecture to support business needs.
Assemble large datasets from structured and unstructured sources for functional requirements.
Identify and implement improvements to automate manual processes and improve scalability.
Build and manage ETL/ELT infrastructure using Python/SQL and GCP big data technologies.
Prepare and transform data to support BI tools (DOMO) and analytics for stakeholders.
Collaborate with Data, Commercial, and Editorial teams to address data challenges.
Improve data systems functionality, performance, and security in line with GDPR.
