Job description

Our first shop opened in 1981 in Penzance, selling durable clothing to artists and mariners. Today, we're a modern, data-enabled omnichannel retailer with a growing international presence. We blend heritage with innovation, designing timely clothing made from responsibly sourced fabrics, and using technology to improve how we operate, grow and serve customers. As we scale in the UK, North America and Europe (primarily through third-party partnerships), we're investing in data, systems and digital capability to support our people and our growth.

As a Data Engineer, you'll work within our strategic Data team, and in collaboration with our business and technology partners you'll design and construct data pipelines that integrate with other relevant systems and business processes. You'll support the implementation of data flows to integrate operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence.

Please note this role is based remotely within the UK, with occasional travel to our Cornwall head offices.

Responsibilities
  • Designing, building, and testing data pipelines for data platforms both on premise and in the cloud.
  • Translating business requirements into robust and modern data architecture while maintaining appropriate design and technical specifications.
  • Developing extraction, loading and transformation scripts and procedures as appropriate to enable processing and transformation of data across the defined architecture, from both internal and external sources.
  • Delivering resilient, scalable and future-proofed data solutions, using appropriate technologies and adhering to best practices.
  • Monitoring and resolving issues in data processing through structured root cause analysis and triage methods.
  • Building capabilities to improve and automate testing and validation of data and appropriately documenting the process.
  • Leveraging data profiling capabilities to support data usage and decision-making.
  • Working closely with other data engineers and data analysts in the team to build a robust platform and best practise standards for implementation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as: Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics - or equivalent professional experience within Data Engineering.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and implementing data warehouse solutions, with strong SQL skills and a solid understanding of data engineering principles.
  • Hands-on experience in developing, tuning, and maintaining SQL-based data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Experience with cloud-native data architectures.
  • Exposure to modern data architecture patterns, data governance, and DevOps practices in data engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability in data problem resolution and supporting the full data development lifecycle.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and data pipeline development.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling, data quality, and metadata management.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native data tools and services, especially within the Azure ecosystem.
  • Python, PySpark and big data experience.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions and maintain clear technical specifications.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, with the ability to identify trends and resolve data-related issues.
  • Competence in technical documentation, ensuring work is accessible and maintainable by others.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
