Job summary

Data Centre Operations Engineer – Contract, 12+ months – South Wales (On‑Site)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Data Centre Operations Engineer with strong technical proficiency in BMC Control‑M scheduling, MicroFocus environments, and batch automation. The role involves working a 4 on / 4 off shift schedule, covering 12‑hour day and night shifts, and requires a valid UK driving licence.

Role Responsibilities
  • Systems monitoring and management
  • Observing monitoring consoles and event‑driven alerts
  • Coordinating with vendors and raising support calls where necessary
  • Responding to out‑of‑hours incidents promptly and effectively
  • Taking corrective action for documented administrative system issues
  • Running and monitoring traditional batch schedules, including Control‑M and Visualcron tools
  • Running release jobs/scripts to deploy development changes into production
  • Physical management of bulk printing machines
  • Daily removal of tapes and boxing up for off‑siting
  • Testing access to systems to prove availability
  • Ensuring security and access procedures are maintained and followed
Required Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience with BMC Control‑M (or similar) for batch processing and job scheduling
  • Experience in a Data Centre / Communications Room environment
  • Understanding of JCL
  • Proficiency in Korn Shell scripting
  • Knowledge of Linux & Unix commands
  • Basic knowledge of Oracle and associated database structures
  • ITIL Fundamentals
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a 24/7 live environment
  • Experience in root‑cause analysis and break‑fix resolution
  • Confidence working both independently and as part of a dedicated support team
