Job summary

AWE is recruiting a Dangerous Goods Specialist to plan and authorise dangerous goods operations at Aldermaston, Reading. You will provide dangerous goods advice, oversee consignments (including Class 7), and ensure compliant marking and labelling of packages.

The role requires strong organisational skills, numerical aptitude, and the ability to work under pressure; training is provided for DGSA and hazardous materials. This is an onsite role with opportunities for development.

Qualifications

  • Experience with hazardous materials is an advantage, training provided.
  • Ability to work in a regulated environment with attention to safety.
  • Willingness to learn and develop in dangerous goods operations.

Responsibilities

  • Support Dangerous Goods Operations to plan and authorise moves.
  • Provide dangerous goods advice and ensure compliant consignments.
  • Marking and labelling of packages to regulatory standards.
  • Approve dangerous goods moves and participate in training material delivery.
  • Attend meetings and forecast demand for shipments.
  • Develop and maintain dangerous goods documentation.

Dangerous Goods Specialist

Location: Aldermaston, Reading

Salary: Starting salary £40,000 dependant on skills and experience plus allowances

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight, with every other Friday as a non-working day . For this role, employees are required to work fully onsite. We support flexible working arrangements where possible, including part-time and varied working hours, while maintaining an onsite presence. AWE is currently recruiting a Dangerous Goods Specialist to plan and authorise dangerous goods operations.

What you'll do:
  • In this key role, you'll support our Dangerous Goods Operations team to ...
  • Provision of dangerous goods advice
  • Consignment of dangerous goods (all classes including Class 7)
  • Marking and labelling packages compliantly
  • Approval of dangerous goods moves in accordance with AWE processes.
  • Support to the delivery of training material
  • Inspection of moves
  • Find efficiencies and deliver continuous improvement through innovation
  • Attend operational meetings, supply information to support those meetings and contribute to discussions.
  • Forecast demand
  • Develop and maintain dangerous goods documentation.
  • Liaise with customers and deal with day-to-day problems regarding their orders in a polite and helpful manner
  • The Company may require you to fulfil any other reasonable duties aligned to your position from time to time in line with business needs

To be successful in this role you will have:
  • Previous Consignor or DGSA qualifications are an advantage, but not essential (as this training can be sponsored in the role).
  • Previous experience working with hazardous materials or in a heavily regulated environment is an advantage, but not essential (as training will be provided).
  • Previous experience in training others is an advantage, but not essential (as training opportunities will be provided)
  • High level of personal integrity, with the ability to handle confidential and otherwise sensitive matters professionally.
  • Ability to be decisive under pressure with the confidence to challenge and push back if required.
  • Proficient in using MS Office Suite. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Prior experience within customer service and administration.

You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
