Job summary

Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool invites applications for two fixed term 12‑month Training Posts at Band 5/6 to undertake the Post Graduate Diploma in Interpersonal Therapy for Adolescents (IPT‑A).

These CYP MH posts are hosted by Sefton CAMHS and Alder Hey Hospital, with university teaching at Manchester University. They require 200 hours of modality practice and placement days across the year, commencing January 2027.

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

Two Fixed Term 12 month Training Post - Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Interpersonal Therapy for Adolescents (IPT-A)

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 or Band 6 (dependent on experience) Mental Health Practitioners to undertake the following training programmes :

Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Interpersonal Therapy for Adolescents (IPT-A)

If you already have a core qualification such as Mental Health Nurse (RMN/RLD), Mental Health Practitioner, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or creative therapies e.g. Art Therapy - with proof of relevant professional registration Or recognised degree level broad based health & social care qualification which will require completion of The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Knowledge Skills and Attributes (2) you will be considered for B6

If you have a Degree level qualification and/or equivalent experience in a child and family related field e.g. social work, youth and community work, nursing you will be considered for the B5 post along with knowledge and skills framework you would be eligible to apply to B5.

Interviews will be October at short notice

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will work within CYP MH as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering, under supervision, high-quality, outcome informed, focused and evidence-based interventions for children and young people in accordance with the competency framework for their therapeutic modality.

Applicants need to be able to start the Post Graduate training programme taught academic dates in January 2027 and commit to attendance at all university based taught and self-study days required by Manchester University.

You will work in the service for the remaining days of the week using your newly developed skills to ensure you gain the necessary clinical practice hours to fulfil the academic programme. This is 200 hours of modality and case specific practice for the full time courses.

Alder Hey Children's Hospital in partnership with Venus and Parenting 2000 are excited to offer a number of therapeutic modality training places for 2027/2028. These posts will be hosted by Sefton Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The training posts will be based in Alder Hey Hospital Community Division with Sefton CAMHS. This will enable the successful applicants to work with children in a variety of community settings with support from their colleagues to identify young people with the level of needs suited to the requirements of the academic programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a recruit to train post for 12 months which includes 2 days study at Prestwich alongside clinical supervision on a 1:1 and group basis. There will be 3 days on placement at Sefton CAMHS were you would provide therapeutic interventions inline with the modality you are training in.

  • Knowledge of behavioural based interventions
  • An understanding of the specific needs of people from different ethnic backgrounds and an understanding of those with disabilities
  • Knowledge of relevant, current legislation
  • Knowledge of safety factors in management of self-harming behaviours and child protection issues
  • Organisational skills to manage and prioritise workload balance appropriately
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to the overall vision and the development of the professional group of mental health practitioners

Qualifications

  • To be able to work independently with young people presenting at risk but being aware to maintain this within the bounds of your responsibility accessing supervision if required out of the formal structure
  • Experience of working in child and adolescent mental health services.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to work with a diverse group of families and professionals from a variety of backgrounds
