Job description

We are looking for exceptional and committed Band 5 nurses to provide outstanding care for our complex patients. If you are eager to learn and develop new skills, have good communication and assessment skills and would relish a challenging opportunity in Critical Care this is the post you have been waiting for.

About Adult Critical Care Units
  • Adult Intensive Care (AICU – QMC): 29 beds. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, respiratory, major trauma, hepatobiliary, spinal, vascular, ENT, maxillofacial, general medical and general surgical.
  • High Dependency Unit (HDU/E12 – QMC): 20 beds. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, major trauma, hepatobiliary, vascular, spinal, ENT and maxillo‑facial surgery.
  • Critical Care Department (CCD – City Campus): 17 beds. Specialities include thoracics, burns, haematology, oncology, gastroenterology, renal, upper GI surgery, respiratory, general medical and surgical patients.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care for critically ill patients, including those on mechanical ventilation, high‑dose oxygen, invasive lines, inotropic infusions, hemofiltration and other advanced therapies.
  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care in a timely manner, working closely with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Mentor students and support link teams or projects after the settling‑in period.
  • Account for the safe, effective delivery of high clinical standards of care and patient satisfaction.
  • Develop and evaluate programme of care; amend as appropriate.
  • Promote trust values and behaviours to ensure an excellent patient and staff experience, ensuring patient satisfaction and staff retention.
  • Share knowledge and learning with peers and students using mentorship and clinical supervision skills.
  • Use effective communication with patients and relatives to maximise productivity and maintain high standards of patient‑led care.
  • Maintain Professional Revalidation by demonstrating new knowledge, innovations and evidence‑based practice.
  • Work variable hours including nights, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
Working Conditions
  • Variable shift pattern with nights, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Salary on a pro‑rata basis for part‑time workers. All Band 5 remuneration details are based on NHS pay scales.
