Council Tax and Benefits Assessment Officer

Salary: £28/ Hour
Job type: Day to Day Cover
Location: London

We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Assessment Officer to join our Council Tax and Benefits team. You’ll play a key role in providing a customer‑focused, efficient, and professional service that supports residents with their council tax, housing benefit, and related enquiries. This role involves processing benefit claims, managing council tax billing and recovery, and providing accurate information and advice to residents and stakeholders. You’ll also ensure all work complies with current legislation and council policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately process housing and council tax benefit claims, billing, collection, and recovery of council tax.
  • Handle customer enquiries via phone, email, and face‑to‑face, providing clear and professional advice.
  • Identify and refer potential fraud cases to the Corporate Anti‑Fraud Team.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of council tax and housing benefit legislation.
  • Use relevant IT systems (e.g. Academy, Enterprise) effectively to manage cases and maintain records.
  • Attend court hearings where necessary and agree suitable payment arrangements with residents.
  • Contribute to team meetings, service improvements, and cross‑departmental projects.

About You

  • Experience in a customer‑facing or front‑line service, ideally within local government or council tax administration.
  • Knowledge of council tax legislation, discounts, and exemptions.
  • Confident using Academy and Enterprise systems (or similar).
  • Excellent numerical accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to spot discrepancies.
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workloads, and maintain confidentiality in line with GDPR.
