Job summary

Sellick Partnership is seeking a Costs Draftsman or Costs Lawyer for a national practice, offering a mix of high-quality work and hybrid working in Barnsley.

You will handle bills from preparation through detailed assessment, with support for career development and flexible arrangements. The role involves a broad caseload, court processes, and mentoring within a growing team.

Qualifications

• Experience as Costs Draftsman or Costs Lawyer or in a specialist costs environment.
• 2+ years in-house or with a costs provider.
• Knowledge of costs procedures and Court rules.
• Experience preparing Bills of Costs and progressing matters through assessment.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Strong organisational and time management abilities.
• Comfortable working independently and in a wider team.
• Flexible and adaptable prioritisation.
• Good IT skills and time recording systems.
• ACL, CILEX or related legal qualifications are advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Bills of Costs for Detailed and Provisional Assessment.
• Manage costs matters through the Court process.
• Draft costs-related documents and correspondence.
• Negotiate and progress costs claims.
• Provide technical costs advice to fee earners and clients.
• Advise clients throughout the lifecycle of matters.
• Assist with costs budgeting and related applications.
• Attend hearings and undertake advocacy where appropriate.
• Support and mentor junior team members.
• Maintain accurate time recording and file management.
• Build relationships with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.

Costs Draftsman / Costs Lawyer | Competitive Salary | Hybrid Working

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Costs Draftsman or Costs Lawyer to join a highly regarded national legal practice with an outstanding reputation for client service, employee wellbeing and career development.

The Opportunity

You’ll play a key role within an established costs team, supporting a broad range of matters from bill preparation through to detailed assessment proceedings.

Your workload is likely to include:

• Preparing Bills of Costs for Detailed and Provisional Assessment
• Managing costs matters through the Court process
• Drafting costs-related documents and correspondence
• Negotiating and progressing costs claims
• Providing technical costs advice to fee earners and clients
• Advising clients throughout the lifecycle of their matters
• Assisting with costs budgeting and related applications where required
• Attending hearings and undertaking advocacy where appropriate
• Supporting and mentoring junior team members
• Maintaining accurate time recording and file management
• Building strong relationships with colleagues, clients and key stakeholders

About You

• Previous experience as a Costs Draftsman, Costs Lawyer or within a specialist costs environment
• Ideally a minimum of 2 years' experience working either in-house or for an external costs provider
• Strong understanding of costs procedures and Court rules
• Experience preparing Bills of Costs and progressing matters through assessment
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Strong organisational and time management abilities
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a wider team
• Flexible and adaptable approach to managing priorities
• Good IT skills and experience with time recording systems
• ACL, CILEX or other relevant legal qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential
