Job summary

The Met Office is seeking an experienced Corporate Risk Manager on a 12-month fixed-term contract to help us drive resilient, informed decision‑making. This role strengthens governance and enables innovation across the enterprise.

You will lead improvement of the risk management framework, provide risk MI to the Board, and collaborate with internal audit. Hybrid working is available, with 37 hours per week to suit deliverables and teams.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in corporate or enterprise risk management in large/complex organisations.
  • Governance and assurance reporting to Executive and Non-Executive Directors with data-driven MI.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills across all levels.
  • Ability to translate complex risk into clear, actionable positions through collaboration.
  • Positive, pragmatic and agile approach enabling innovation in delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Own and lead continuous improvement of the Enterprise Risk and Opportunity Management approach.
  • Support ExCo to identify principal risks aligned with risk appetite and balanced risk taking.
  • Liaise with Domain Central Office risk coordinators for monthly risk submissions.
  • Provide Enterprise Risk MI and insights to the Board, Audit & Risk Assurance Committee, ExCo and Domain Boards.
  • Build relationships with Sponsor Department and Civil Service risk community.
  • Collaborate with Internal Audit on four lines assurance and year-end Orange Book reporting.

We're looking for an exceptional Corporate Risk Manager on a 12-month fixed-term contract to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Corporate Risk Manager, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

Whilst this is a temporary position for 12 months, there is potential for it to develop into a permanent position.

We are seeking an experienced Corporate Risk Manager to join The Met Office at an exciting point in our risk management improvement roadmap. We are looking for a forward-thinking professional who sees risk management not simply as a control function, but as a powerful enabler of innovation, transformation, and informed decision-making.

You will build on significant progress already made in embedding a modern, enterprise‑wide approach to risk management and provide continuity as we embed new ways of working and further mature our approach to risk management across the organisation..

Your key duties
  • To own and lead the continuous improvement of the Met Office's Enterprise Risk and Opportunity Management approach, ensuring compliance with the Met Office Governance Framework and alignment with Orange Book principles .
  • Support our ExCo to identify and respond to principal risks that could impact strategy deliver, ensuring alignment with risk appetite and enabling balanced risk taking.
  • Liaise directly with Domain Central Office risk coordinators to maintain monthly enterprise risk register submissions and support effective application of our Enterprise Risk Management Policy and Framework.
  • Provide Enterprise Risk MI and insights to the Met Office Board, Audit & Risk Assurance Committee, ExCo and Domain Boards; challenging areas of weakness in risk control and response, including not taking enough risk, recommending actions and identifying emerging risk themes.
  • Build positive relationships with key external stakeholders including our Sponsor Department (BIST) and the wider Civil Service risk community.
  • Collaborate with Internal Audit on 4 lines assurance assessments and lead on year-end Orange Book compliance reporting. Ensure the risk management assurance map and maturity self-assessment is maintained, evidenced based and informs improvement plans.
Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
  • Significant experience in corporate or enterprise risk management in a large and/or complex organisation.
  • Demonstrable risk governance and assurance reporting expertise at an Executive and Non-Executive Director level, including use of data driven risk MI (Expert by Nature).
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with key internal stakeholders across all levels of the organisation (Better Together)
  • The ability to translate complex risk scenarios into clear and actionable balanced risk positions through collaboration and engagement with experts.
  • Be able to demonstrate a positive, pragmatic and agile approach to risk management that enables innovation in delivery (Keep Evolving).
Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience using PowerBI dashboards, IRM or GRC tools
  • Experience with using AI Agents in risk management to drive value for stakeholders.

As our Corporate Risk Manager, your total reward package will be up to £75,857 annually, which includes:

  • £54,515 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
