About Haringey

Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.

Our history champions change‑makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.

About The Role

The London Borough of Haringey is the lead local authority for the North London coroner area which covers the boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Enfield, Haringey and Harrow. The council is legally responsible for providing the financial resources and staff to support the senior coroner in discharging his statutory responsibilities for the investigation of deaths and the running of the coroner’s court for the area. The council shares the costs of the service on a per capita basis with the other four boroughs.

The Council is seeking to appoint a Coroner Service Manager who will act as senior professional lead for the council with overall responsibility for providing inclusive and compassionate leadership and managing and developing the service in collaboration with the senior coroner to ensure a high‑quality service to bereaved families.

As the service manager you will be accountable for performance and budget management in line with the cash limit, work closely with council colleagues and external partners to ensure operating practices, policies, plans, contracts, and strategies are effective, and meet legal and governance requirements. You will monitor regulatory landscape changes and lead the council’s relationship with the other four boroughs, focusing on budget forecasting, expenditure control, and value for money. You will also work with a diverse group of stakeholders including bereaved families, police, the Ministry of Justice, the Chief Coroner’s office, GPs, funeral directors, mortuaries, lawyers, and other external bodies using high‑level communication and interpersonal skills.

Due to high demand and the uniqueness of the service you will often operate in challenging circumstances and must apply a sensitive, discreet approach to your work, using well‑reasoned judgement to make informed decisions. Previous experience of working in the coroner service is not essential and we are keen to hear from candidates who can demonstrate transferable experience and skillsets from a range of compatible professions including democratic services, legal/para legal, law enforcement and the bereavement sector.

About You

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Experience of leading and motivating a team, maintaining a positive work environment and setting clear objectives and priorities
  • Ability to work unsupervised and undertake a wide range of senior duties with a high level of initiative, judgement and creativity
  • Experience in managing budget, contracts, resources and facilities
  • Excellent leadership, communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with sensitive and complex situations, showing empathy and compassion for bereaved and other stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational, planning and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in dealing with enquiries, and be sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations
  • Practical problem solving, with focus on efficiency, best value principles and the effective management of conflicting priorities
  • Confidence, assertiveness and resilience
