Job summary

Sodexo Group at Derwent School in Henlow seeks an experienced Cook to support the Cook Manager in running the school kitchen and finances, presenting dishes to the highest standards for hundreds to over a thousand students.

You will follow recipes, work with fresh produce, and ensure all health and safety procedures are met. The role offers regular hours, with public holidays off and term-time pattern.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year hands-on cooking experience
  • Experience cooking for large groups (100–1300)
  • Experience following recipes; working with fresh produce
  • Basic food handling certification; awareness of health and safety

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook, present and serve food to company standards for breakfast, lunch and hospitality.
  • Adhere to Food Safety, Health & Safety, Allergen (COSHH/HACCP) regulations.
  • Carry out skills training for catering staff.
  • Ensure service counters and food are presented to company standards.
  • Ensure portions follow business requirements.
  • Complete daily/weekly cleaning of preparation and storage areas and catering spaces.
  • Deliver high standards of customer service, cleanliness, tidiness and operational activity.

Job introduction

As a Cook for Sodexo at Derwent School, Hitchin Rd, Henlow SG16 6BA, you will assist the Cook Manager to oversee all aspects of the food and beverage operations as well as the finances for your school’s kitchen. You will support the Cook Manager in ensuring you showcase what the kitchen supplies, presenting it in the most eye-catching way possible, ensuring we are offering the best service possible. As well as this, you will not work unsociable hours and you will get public holidays off… including Christmas!

What you do:



  • Prepare, cook, present, and serve food to company standards which may include breakfast, morning break, lunch, and hospitality.

  • You will adhere to all company compliance (such as Food safety, Health and Safety, Allergen awareness, COSHH and HACCP regulations).

  • To carry out craft/ skills training for catering staff.

  • To ensure that all service counters and food is presented to company standards.

  • To guarantee that each dish served is portioned according to business requirements.

  • To complete daily/ weekly cleaning duties as instructed by the line manager and this includes all food preparation and storage areas, all catering communal areas. Removal of waste from catering area.

  • Deliver exceptionally high standards in customer service, cleanliness, tidiness, and other operational activity.


What you bring:



  • A minimum of 1 years of experience in hands on cooking, training on Food Hygiene, and Health & Safety will be given.

  • Must have expertise on cooking on a large scale, anywhere between 100 – 1300 students.

  • Have experience following recipes, possibly in a similar setting.

  • Have experience working with fresh produce and ingredients.

  • Be aware of the importance of adhering to health and safety procedures.

  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines in a busy Kitchen environment.

  • Be professional, leading by example and having a positive outlook is key.

  • Hold basic food handling skills certification

  • Term Time only (39 week Working Contract paid over 52 weeks)**


Equated pay (sometimes known as spread-over pay) is a method of paying you for your contracted hours, working weeks and holiday pay spread over 12 months instead of just receiving pay during the months that you work and none during the school closures/non-working weeks.
