Job summary

The Education Authority in Ballyclare invites applications for a Kitchen Assistant role to support the preparation and cooking of school meals. You will work in a team to provide a hygienic, efficient service that satisfies customers and supports sales within the unit.

You will assist with menu preparation and portions, maintain hygiene records, supervise staff, handle admin tasks such as stock checks and deliveries, and participate in promoting the service to parents and principals.

Qualifications

• Experience in cooking a full range of meals for a school kitchen.
• Ability to record temperatures and maintain hygiene logs.
• Assist with menu planning and portion control.

Responsibilities

• Skilled cooking activities connected with the full range of meals (assist with menu preparation, portion control, dietary meals and function catering).
• Assist with record keeping and hygiene/health and safety in the kitchen, including recording temperatures.
• Direction or shared supervision of other employees and operational control of service points, including transported meals.
• Admin duties such as planning meals, stock-taking, stores/fridges, and receipt of deliveries; general kitchen management in the absence of the Senior/Unit Catering Supervisor.
• Shared supervision of staff, training of personnel and cash handling where appropriate.
• General kitchen duties including washing up, setting up/clearing, cleaning kitchen and dining areas.
• Assist in promoting the service to parents, principals and customers to increase uptake and secure premises as required.

JOB PURPOSE

To assist the Senior/Unit Catering Supervisor in all activities concerned with the preparation and cooking of meals. Team participation is essential to provide an efficient hygienic service, to achieve customer satisfaction and to promote sales within the unit.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Skilled cooking activities connected with the full range of meals (for example, assist with the preparation of menus, portion control, the provision of special dietary meals and function catering where appropriate).
2. To assist with:
   1. Record keeping.
   2. Control of hygiene, health and safety in the kitchen including recording of temperatures.
   3. The direction and/or shared supervision of other employees.
3. To undertake operational control of service points including transported meals.
4. Associated administrative duties as required which may include assistance with:
   1. The planning of meals.
   2. Stock-taking, including the organisation of stores and fridges and receipt of deliveries.
   3. General kitchen management in the absence of the Senior/Unit Catering Supervisor.
   4. Shared supervision of other employees.
   5. Training of staff.
   6. Cash handling duties where appropriate.
5. General kitchen duties as required which may include washing up, setting up and clearing away equipment and tables, cleaning of the kitchen, dining room surrounds and equipment.
6. Assist in the promotion of the service to parents, principals and customers to increase the uptake.
7. Securing of premises as required.
8. Duties as delegated in connection with service provision.
