Job description
Controls Project Engineer

Controls Project Engineer sought for an established automation and drives engineering business, delivering complex control system upgrades and bespoke solutions across a wide range of industrial sectors. This role is site‑focused, supporting customers primarily across the North East, with office‑based work when not on customer sites.

Salary £45‑50k + Pool Van/Mileage, paid overtime, call‑out allowance, BUPA, life assurance, flexible hours. County Durham. Ref: 25128.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for delivering controls projects from concept through to commissioning, with a strong focus on upgrading legacy systems and designing modern Siemens‑based solutions from scratch.

Key duties include:

  • Upgrading older Siemens and Rockwell‑based systems to Siemens S7‑1500 with integrated Siemens safety.
  • Designing and programming Siemens TIA Portal systems.
  • Working on large‑scale process equipment such as steel processing systems, test cells, plastic film winding, drive winders, tensioners, power cells, cable and wire winding machinery.
  • Site commissioning, fault finding, and customer support.

Projects are varied, hands‑on, and technically challenging — ideal for someone who enjoys seeing a system through end‑to‑end.

The Person

Requirements:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Control Systems Engineer within manufacturing/industry.
  • Fully conversant with Siemens TIA Portal and able to design systems from scratch.
  • Experience upgrading legacy PLC and safety systems preferred.
  • Comfortable working on customer sites and being flexible when required.
  • Experience with MV/HV systems or a strong desire to develop in this area.
  • Demonstrate Siemens capability during the process (examples of previous work encouraged).

Location: County Durham, commutable from Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Middlesbrough, Peterlee, Hartlepool, Seaham, Washington, Newton Aycliffe, Redcar and surrounding.
